County Fair Board. Roenes love affair with the Fair began when she was fifteen, and desperately wanted to join a Club. No club existed in her part of Granger, so her mother contacted the Utah State Extension Office, and a suggestion was made that Roene start a group of her own. So I became a leader at fifteen, she recalls. I had a group of girls, all interested in sewing, and of course we all wanted to enter our work in the fair, she laughs. That group of ten girls was the beginning. "I was a leader for 46 years, said Roene, and I loved those girls then, and still do. Back in those early days of her involvement with the Fair the facilities were nothing like they are now. My cousin, Eloise Irving, and I, used to help set up our displays in a Ive been in charge of the event for the last 15 or 20 years, says Roene. Im still over the home economics department, remarks Roene. Back in 1962 we had a hard time getting enough displays for the commercial booths, and could fill them up with items. Now the commeuial entries run into the hundteds. she reveals. The Fair has been a family affair for the Woods. Husband Everett was always called on to help out, whether babysitting, tending kids, or helping hang displays. And he still helps - hes out running errands for me right now, Roene says gratefully. I get busy in the office here, so 4-- sleep. As they got older they ran errands, delivered messages, helped hang displays whatever needed doing. Norma still lives close by and helps with the home economics displays, she says. I have never in my life worked with a more congenial group of people than the Fair board and office staff, she declares. One year we handled a tent as ! big as a house, she tells. Mrs. Wood was in charge of the County Sweetheart contest until this last year. Mrs Wood has been a member of the County Fair board for 35 years, and has served as secretary-treasure- r for the past 20 years. Back in 1949 I helped hang quilts with Barbara Whitbeck and Orpha Bringhurst, and we are still all involved with the Fair, she enough time to do everything, sighs. I remember when I was a young married, living in Bennion, camp, taking groups of kids to sometimes as many as 60 or 70 in a group, and we women would pitch the tents, chop wood, the whole bit, she laughs. One time my family gave dad a big tent for Christmas. When we took it to the camp, we found it had no ties and it took hours to figure it out but we got it up. Most people are so cooperative and good to work with, and every year many of them drop in to say how much they enjoyed it and tell us what a great Fair it was. Clubs, Sweetheart contests, home economic displays, lots of work, long hours - 15 to 18 hour days at Fair time - and, especially, the many many people, these are the memories that make the County Fair so special to Roene Wood and her kind.
