Show WEST Octogenarian - Thursday, July VIEW valley 9, 1981 Western Art Is Both Passion And Product Of Marvin Andelin I paint with oils mostly, but I use acrylic once in a while. I did some small Indian pictures and sold them to a trading post in Arizona to sell as souvenirs. Painting is a way of life for the artist. It keeps me active and its something I love to do, and I have plenty of time for it in the winter. When many of our older citizens find the long hours boring or lonely Marvin assesses his artistic activities with the brief I keep comment, by Margaret Slack artists cant believe Fellow well-know- well-know- "The Working Cowboy" is representative of the type of painting that Marvin Woolsey Marries Deaun Allen S. Andelin exhibits In LDS Rites n western art and love to paint the Navajos. Ive been painting large pictures, but they dont sell as well, he confides, so now Im doing some smaller ones. I had 10 western pictures that were shown in Denver and Texas. He and his wife lived in N.Y. for a while and it was there that he took best of show at a festival. He has shown pictures in the Amherst Gallery and the Jamestown Chataqua Mall. Our association has two traveling shows, one that goes north and one to the south, to elementary and junior highs throughout the state. Mr. Andelin has a studio at his dont use it Granger home. though. I moved inside so my wife wouldnt be so lonesome, he explains. I paint every day in the wintertime, but in the summer, there is too much to do, such as keeping up the garden and yard. One thing with painting, though, youve got to stick with it, he advises. When I was studying with my uncle, he always told me to play with color, because my art was getting too drab. One of the favorite pieces is the painting he did two years ago for a BYU exhibit, of Jacob Hamblin rt young-at-hea- n 72. Marvin S. busy. Which seems to prove the point that a person who enjoys his work and play usually stays young. Marvin has been painting off and on for the past 60 years. He studied Utah artists with Cornelius Salisbury, who happens to be his uncle, as well as with the painters nephew. Paul Salisbury, both famous for their western landscapes. Marvin is a brother of B. Y. Andelin who taught art at Ogden high until he retired. A sister taught art in California also. The Granger artist was born in Cedar City. He worked for UP&L for 20 years running the sub station in Helper. For many years he worked for Civil Aeronautics, surveying and testing sites, from Canada to Mexico and throughout the western states. During all that time, he was taking slides which he now uses in his landscape and western pictures. I became tired of all that traveling, he admits, and I put in for a transfer to the Radio Control Center here in Salt Lake. I then spent 10 years here before retiring at age Fre-doni- a.
