Two instructors at Utah Technical College have been singled out by the Kiwanis club of Salt Lake. Recognized for their outstanding ability as teachers were Herb Van Os and Joseph Baker, who received framed certificates of commen- dation from the group. Presenting the awards was Jay L. Nelson, president emeritus to Utah Tech, representing the vocational guidance committee of the Kiwanis club. The commendation presented by Mr. Nelson Herb Van Os stated, exemplifies the fact that America is still the land of opportunity. He moved to the United States from Holland in 1945 and began the task of mastering a new lang- uage and a new trade. He became very adept as a machinist and, from EIMCO, came to the college in 1965. Mr. Van Os has taught machine shop and mathematics since that time. He is a very effective math instructor in UTCs metal trades and COUNCIL apprenticeship thing proto grams and he loves program computers. Mr. Van Os spends many hours with students beyond the regular class time. He truly loves them. This is the second time Van Os has been recognized by the club. It was recalled that Mr. Baker came to Utech 16 years ago from Sperry Univac to teach electronics. Presently, he teaches and specializes in computer applications design.
