Wilford W'llding Wilford w'as born in Downey, Idaho but moved to Salt Lake when he was still quite young. Educated in Salt Lake schools, he graduated Wilford worked at the smelter until the big strike in 1946, but with a family to feed he felt the need to strike out on his own and started a fresh vegetable business that he took house to house in Magna and Garfield using a converted school bus. For four years the business flourished. Housewives looked forward to his visits because they were assured fresher produce than was then available in the area stores. But with more and more women being absorbed into the work force his clientel gradually diminished until he finally gave up his route. For the next 12 years he worked two jobs. During the daytime he was custodian of Garfield school. At night he became a security guard for the Kennecott Refinery. When the South Kearns school opened up Wilford was transferred to the Kearns area and was the custodian from the schools opening until his retirement in July 1976 after working for Granite District for 26 years. In addition to being a full time wife and mother, Irene also worked for Granite District as a matron for 14 years. She retired in 1976. Both of the Wildings have been active in the LDS church. An interesting sidelight to Wiifords church activities is the fact that two church presidents presided at his ordination as a high priest and a bishop. Spencer W. Kimball ordained him as a high priest and Harold B. Lee ordained him Bishop. In addition he served on the stake high council for eleven years, as well as being ward Sunday School superintendent and executive secretary. Irene has been equally faithful, having taught in the Relief Society for If Bride tw Taking vows in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 22, were Jill Worthington and Gregory J. Chapman. During her junior year in high school the W'ilding family moved into her ward. For Wilford it was love at first sight, but it took three years to persuade Irene to marry him. Finally on January 21, 1931 the couple traveled to the Salt Lake City and County Building where they were married in the county clerks office, with their best friends, Morris Udy and Erma West, standing up with them. For two years the couple lived in Denver. Then in 1934 they moved to Garfield when Wilford hired on at the American Smelting and Refining Co. Their first home was a small three-roohouse on West 14th Street, but seven years later they moved into a bigger Garfield house on West 17th where they lived until they moved the home to Magna in 1955 when the copper company went out of the real estate business. . years, and at the same time nearly serving as president of the Mutual for two separate terms of office.
