Two years later he began guerrilla training at Moscow's Lumumba University, wherehefell in with radical Palestinians, In 1970 he joined up with George Habash and Wadi Haddad and the ultra-radical Popular Front For the Liberation of Palestine. Terrorist attacks he was said to have beeninvolved in included: —The May 30, 1972 machine gun attack by three Japanese commandos, claiming to represent Arab guerrilla groups, whokilled 25 passengers and wound 77 in the Lod Airport massacre in Tel Aviv. —The Sept. 5, 1972, Arab guerrilla attack at the Munich Olympicsthat killed 11 Israeli athtletes. five guerrillas and a West Germanpoliceman. —The December 1975 kidnapping of 11 oil ministers from a Vienna meeting of the Organization of Oil Exporting Countries —Organizing the 1976 PFLP hijacking of a French jet in Athens an incident that ended with the Israeli commando raid on Uganda's Entebbe airport July 3 and the rescueof 103 passengers. —The 1974 bombing of Le Drugstore in Paris that killed two and in jured 20. Reports of his activities, though usually sketchy, linked Carlos with numerous terrorist organizations in Europe. the Middle and Latin America including Italy’s Red Brigades, the Baader-Meinhof Gang and Black September Carlos appeared to drop fromsight in 1976 “probablybecausehe had become an embarrass ment anda liabilityto his own side,’’ according to Miss Sterling. Reports said his instructions apparently from Libyan leader Moammar Khadafy — in the 1975 OPECkidnapping wereto kill Saudi Arabian oil minister Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani as well as the oil minister of Iran and that he spared their lives for a bribe of $5 million. His namecontinued to surface, however, of The World Almanac Split personality — medically known as multiple personality — is the display of two or morewell-organized personalities, both male and female, which alternately inhabited Sybil. Prince, one of the pioneers in the study of mul- tiple personality, stated that in the presence of this phenomenon the ego is broken personalities in one person. he personalities may become dissociated from one another and each per- sonality may have anindependent temporary existence. Sometimes the personalities may be totally unawareof each other. Only about 100 cases of multiple personality can be found in published peyelis: tric literature. Most of the cases involve women, though the medical profession does not knowprecisely why this should be so; presumably women are more prone to the psychiatric traumas that are thought to cause multiple personality. Multipleae arises when the individual is unable to adjust to conflicting urges within himself or herself. If these warring urges are acutely incompatible, the nly ual may react to the tress by segregating one As of his or her personality and molding it into a sepa rate self that appears to carry on a separate existence. In way, the person's internal conflicts are subdued and the clashing personalities are kept out of each other’s way. Each of these personalities is usually a full-fledged “individual,” with characteristic mannerisms, speech patterns, thought processes and ways of behaving. The personalities have different names, wear different clothes and write with different handwriting. One personality may be ouem oe other a one lou poke and profane, the other quiet and prim; one a spect ift, the other a the individual switches from one personality to the other without warning. He or she is usually tad unconscious of the switc and may remain in each personality for time periods ranging from a few minutes to several years. The first literary use of inEdgrAlenwas found mee Allen Poe'sa “William Wilso1 Louis servers ace his debt to Poe in “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” The possibility that such cases reacting to the environment. The conscious states persist form a new personality, which is capableof independent activity and may either alternate or coexist with the original one. The breaking up of the original personality at different moments along different lines of cleavage may produce several new psychologic entities. Following are a few ersaunles of the known “eprobably the first lished case is that of Reynolds, which ap a in the 1817 Medical Repository, a medical journal published in New YorkCity. Considered a normal, intelligent, shy and devout woman, Miss Reynolds at age 18 began to have a series of “fits,” after which Abeae jot aly everyad ever learned aHecate quite a different person — buoyant, witty, fond of company and a loverofnature. After about a month, her normal ey returned after a long sleep but without any memory of what had happened during her lapse. From then on, the two sates alternated irregularly. Dr. Morton Prince’s famous case study of Miss Beauchamp (‘‘Dissociation of a Personality,” New York, 1905) sparked the interest of American psychiatrists and psychologists in the phenomenonof multiple personality. Miss Beauchamp, treated by Prince from 1898 to 1904, had at least three distinct aa the pious it”; the strong, willful, aly ‘provoked “woman”, andthe childish “Sally.” Prince succeeded in reintegrating the different Toa After her Beauchamp te her own account of herexperiences in which she explained that her personality had been entirely normal until she suffered a great nervous stress after the loss of a loved one. She described how in her different personalities her tastes in reading, dress and social pleasures differed markedly and in somecases werediametrically opposed. ince noted that her personalit differences occurred along intellectual and temperamental rather than along ethical lines. Fortunately, each of her personalities was incane of doing harm to the others. Another famouscase, that of Eve White, was reported in the 1950s and madeinto a aoe motion picture, “The Three Faces of Eve.” “Sybil,” written by Flora Rheta Schreiber, is one of the most dramatic cases ever published. She Taylor and Martin have concluded that the phenomenonis similar to a variety otaes raemality distury maintained thatthere is a continuum running from restlessness during sleep through somnambulism, day-dreaming and partial dissociation of personality to the psychoneuroses and multiple personality, the latter being the climax of failures in integration. Cases of multiple personality are usually curable. Psychiatric treatment helps the afflicted individual to bring the twosides of his or her personality into contact with each other. This is the first step towarda cure. Such contact eventually leads to reintegration of iS two warring sides of personality. When the indi. vidual, through psychiatric therapy, becomes able to tolerate the conflicting urges or emotions within himself or herself, then he or she no longer needs to switch back and forth from one personality to another. However, some psychiatrists are skeptical of the phenomenon of multiple personality. They believe it may be the result of unwitting suggestions by the doctor to the patient, or of deliberate fraud on the part ie patient either to attract attention or to evade responsibility.
