Larger stones begin in the same way, but as the small hailstone falls, it meets a strong rising currentof air and is carried up againto the level where raindrops are forming. New drops thencling to the hailstone. As it falls once more through the cold air belt, the raindrops spread into an enveloping layer and freeze, making the stone larger. This rising and falling may be repeated time after time until the hailstone has added so many layers that its weight is sufficient to overcometheforceofthe rising current of air, and it falls to the ground.
