Show TV2—THE HERALD,Provo, Utah, Monday, June1, 1981 Actress Perry Gave Roles Fit His ‘Fantasy Zone’ The Tony Its Name It is silver, a disk engraved with the masks ot tragedy and comedy. It is attached atits axis to a silver half moon. And unlike its cousins Oscar, Emmyand Grammy,it is named to honor a person — a significant figure of the American theater. When the Tony Awardsare presented on Sundayat 8 p.m. on Channel 5 ‘The 35th Annual Tony Awards” special on the CBS Television Network, millions of Americans will view Broadway at its most distinguished, but few know howthe theater's most cherished prize got its name. The Tony Awards were created in honor of Antionette Perry, an actress, a Broadwaystar,a director — and much more. Miss Perry was a lovely, blonde actress who came to New York from Denver and by the age of 18, was a star. Two years later, in 1908, she retired to marry and raise a family. After her husband’s death in 1922, returned to stage and acted in severalplays, including “‘Minick” by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. Working in association with Brock Pemberton, she directed several memorable comedies, including Preston Sturges’ ‘‘Strictly Dishonorable” and Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prizewinning ‘‘Harvey.”’ During World War II, Antoinette Perry was executive director of the American Theatre Wing, which greatly assisted members ofthe armed forces and their families. She was one of the movers behind the famous Stage Door Cantee, the Broadway haven for enlisted men. . As an actor, Richard Chamberlain is happiest when working on the stage. But he is quick to admit that some of his best stage training came from si Chamberlain cameto international popularity during his five seasons astelevision's Dr. Kildare back in the mid-i960's. Whenthat long runfinally came to an end, he took a quantum leap forward by accepting aninvitation to go to Birmingham, England, and be the first American actor since John Barrymore. 40 years earlier, to play Hamlei on Shakespeare's native soil. “T felt as equipped to tackle Hamlet as a mountaineer facing Everest barefoot,"’ Chamberlain said “My theater training waslimited, to say the least. So I worked with the director for weeks and weeks before he wentinto rehearsals. It was a night - and day crash course. “My television background proved very helpful, because I was used to long days and nights on the ‘Kildare’ set. So my familiarity with a killing schedule allowed me to knock myself out in Birmingham.” . The result? The world discovered a major new the same time, his television roles have assumed heightened stature. The dual careers seem to feed one another. So it is particularly fitting that Richard Chamberlain will serve as co-l ost, with Ellen Burstyn, for the theater’s most glamorous night on television, “The 35th Annual Tony Awards”’ special, to be broadcast, from the Mark Hellinger Theater in New York City (See related story on this page for time andstation). Chamberlain looks forward to the assignment because, among other reasons, it will allow him to spend some moretime in New York. ‘“‘I like that city’s energy and its attitude toward show business," he said. ‘‘Hollywood is so money-oriented. In New York, among the professionals, good work is appreciated for its own sake.” Good work is the source of this actor's greatest pride. During the past dozen years he has played an enormous range ofroles, all which fall within what he describes as his “‘field of limitation.” “T couldn't have played General Patton,’ he explained. ‘That role was not within my “fantasy theater star. The handsomeactor has goneonto act zone.” But roles which havefallen into that zone on Broadwayand in theaters throughout America.
