Canit trigger within us a state of depression or ecstasy’ What are its strange capabilities in determining human behavior? It must be significant. Otherwise it wouldn't be a constant topic of conversation Even before the Indian rain dance, man was preoccupied with weather. Thunder was the roar of the . and lightning was further displeasure from on high Maybe this is why some (especially dogs) are susceptible to changes in the weather — becoming melancholy or upset when it rains. Unlike dogs, however, most of us don't howl. But children can get pretty restless. They look out and are immediately reminded of the nursery thyme: Rain, rain, go away; Comeagair. some other day; Little Johnny wantsto play. But of course, cloudy skies and rain do not fracture everyone's happiness. Sportsmen, weathermen and farmers like rain. They see vast lakes and green fields from the moisture. And others, just everydaypeople. are moved by the cleansing effectit seems to bring. They find comfort and contentmentin .he ‘pitter patter of the rain on the voof ' — a sort of melodic beat that Juiis them to sleep. So what is wrong with us — the minority—who are jarred by the darknessof the rain, who shudderat the sap back rhythm of the windshield blades against the window, who carry our umbrellaslike a burden over our heads? Are we a different breed — marching out of tune? Why can't we too see lakes and green fields? Why must weinsist that every day be a sunshiny day, and every cloud havea silverlining? Rain. By LETITIA (TISH) BALDRIGE r Ms. Baldrige: I went to an office party held in a hotel near the office. SinceI alsolive near the office, I went home first to to change. Boy, was it embarrassing! Everyone else came in their office clothes, and there I was looking really nice, I thought, in my black dress and rhinestone earrings. Someof the other girls laughed at me and said some pretty nasty things. When you're in a situation like that, whatdo you do? I never hated an evening so much.| sat in a cornerall night and suffered. — M.L.E., Atlanta You would have felt more comfortable going home to change, since you live nearby. You also could have gone upto the girls who were laughing at you and explained you didn’t know everyone was going right from theoffice. You should have said how embarrassed you were — and that would have made them feel sympathetic toward you, not hostile. Things like that happen in one’slife, and the best thing to do is to forget them.
