Ed Daemon, the IRS Omaha District Public affairs office, said Wednesday the audits resulted from a case in which the agency sued Brigham Young Universityin Salt Lake City to obtain a list of 150 donors who claimed $18 million in gifts of mining stock with an actual value of $2 million, Daemon said investors purchase mining stock frorn a promoter who increases the value of the stock at the end of the year. The investors then donate the property to a schoolor charity and take a tax deduction on the higher value. Daemonsaid one groupofinvestors, eomane some Nebraskans, donated $15,000 in Nevada mining stock to Young and the promoter gave the investors an appraisal of $225,000 at the end of the year. ‘The tax return audits, Daemon said, involve persons across the state.
