He wasn’t even the high scorer. Clark Burgess had 13 to earn that honor. Hansen and Todd Dinick had 12 each. Roger Brady had 10. But Hansen hadsix of the most importantpoints of the game. They came in overtime as he managed to slip underneath the Thunderbird defense three times and thus helped insure his team’s victory. Hansen has been playing basketball for the Cavemensince his sophomore year but didn’t makethe varsity until this season. He has, however, made up for lost time. He has averaged 13.8 points per game over American Fork’s first 10 outings and had a high gameof 30 points against Bingham, one of the 4-A powers in the state this year. “Kimball has been a pleasant surprise,” Allred said. ‘‘He has been in the program, but just never surfaced until now. He’s one of those guys who is corning on as a senior. He had very little playing time as a sophomore, developed a lot as a junior and now he’s one of our most consistent rebounders and scorers. “He’s an intelligent player who has putin the time(it takes to develop),” Allred said. ‘‘He’s quiet and he works hard. He really battles for us on defense and usually draws the toughest inside person. Forhis size (6-3) he does a heck of a job.” “T just took every chanceI could get to play basketball,’’ Hansensaid in explaining his emergencethis season. Sometimes, his way is un- orthodox, and a good illustrationof that wasone episode which tookplacein the Steelers’ locker room before one of their practice sessions during the regular season. Tt involved guard Sam Davis, the team's 35-year-old offensive captain who is the senior manon the team with 13 years service and whom all the Steeler players respect tremendously for his ability and good sense. Cornerback Mel Blount was walking by Davis’ locker this particular day, and seeing him getting dressed to wat he stopped a moment. “You know. I really care a lot about you," he said to Davis. “Don't give me that jive,’ Davis answered, laughing. “T mean it, you're my hero,” Blount continued. ‘‘Anyonehere in this league = long as you've been, has got to be my 0, Jack Lambert, the Steelers’ rough, tough linebacker, then began teasing Davisalso. Right about this time, Dennis Winston, the Steelers’ third-year linebacker, haj to come along, andnoticing a nearby trash bag full of garbage, including those paper cups the playersuse to spit their chewing tobaccoin, playfully said to Davis, ‘I oughta take that bag and stuff it over your face.” Davis knew Winston was kidding. He decided to doa little kidding, too, and he startled Winston, and everyone else for that matter, by giving out with one of those blootcurdling shouts Muhammad Ali specializes in, right in Winston’sface. “We old guys gotta fight back,” Davis hollered. Somewhere along theline in all this horse play, the trash bag was overturned and Davis, who ordinarily would pick it up, simply letit lie there. “T'm notgoing ope it up,” he said. Noll cameout of his private office and sawthe terrible messon thefloor. Without a word, he went back into his office, obtained a vacuum cleaner somewhere, and cleanedupall the dirt himself. For the most part, Hansen played down his role in helping the Cavemen attain a 5-1 record in Region Six play, good for secondplace at the moment. “We have a team offense,” he said. “Other teams can’t focus on one person because we're all about the same.
