Show Page 22—THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Thursday, January 17, 1980 CIA Report Says Russia Spends Much More on Defense Than U.S. spending during the 1970's surpassed that of the United States by a wide margin and probablywill continue to do so. The Soviet Union spent about 30 percent more than the United States for defense during the last decade. said the report released Tuesday by the House Armed Services Committee. “The pattern was one of continuous growth throughout the decade,”’ the CIA said. “In contrast. the trend in U.S. outlays was downward for most of the "S| a High Blood Pressure DEAR DR. LAMB — Does hypertension mean high blood pressure? Can you suffer with hyperten sion if you don’t have abnormally high blood pressure? DEAR READER — Tension refers to pressure and hyper means increased so the word hypertension is exactly the same thing as high blood pressure. There is no way you can suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure) without having high blood pressure. A person's blood pressure may fluctuate, resulting in normal readings on one occasion and high readings on another. Most doctors do not call this hypertension but prefer to say that such people are vascular hyperreactors. This happens because blood pressure often is in a reflex manner just the sameas the pupil of your eye constricts or dilates in a reflex manner to Le The reflexes that trigger such changes in blood pressure are mediated through nerves that you do not have any conscious control over. They are part of the autonomic (which means automatic) nervous Evidence on weapon systems currently in production at major defense industries plants. and the increasing costs of modern weapons indicate that this long-term trend in Soviet defense activities will continue into the 1980s at about the same rate of growth,” said the report The study paper represents es- timates of ‘whatit would cost to produce and man in the United States a military force of the same size and with the same weaponsinventory as that of the U.S.S.R. and to operate that force as the Soviets 1979 the Soviet total was about $165 billion, approximately 50 percent do," the report said lion ‘The estimated dollar costs of Soviet defense activities caught up with U.S. defense outlays in 1971 and exceeded them by a widenin, margin through 1979,"§ it said. “in: higher than the US. total of $108 bil- The CIA concluded that Soviet defense activities accounted for 11 to 12 percent of the Soviet Gross National Product in the 1970's. Mostheart specialists do not feel that individuals with intermittent normal readings deserve medicines to control high blood pressure. Rather, mostof these people need to identify the elements of stress in their life that they react to. If these stressful situations can be eliminated orcontrolled, it’s less likely that there will be intermittent high blood pressure readings. DEAR DR. LAMB — Recently I developed a lump in my stomach on the left side below the navel. I had X rays and the doctor said the bulge is the aorta artery. They feelit isn’t large to operate at this time. Could you tell me more about this condition and what can I expect to happen in the future? Will this enlarge to a dangerous stage and what is facing me? DEAR READER — If you could feel the lump before the X ray, it mustbe fairly prominent. Your letter suggests that your doctor thinks you have an aneurysm of the aorta, the large artery that runs al the spine inside the chest, through the diaphragm and into the abdomen. It divides into the two main arteries, the femoralarteries, that go to your legs. Nowyou could have someelongationor kinking of the aorta which madeit prominent or you could have a real aneurysm. An sm is a place where the aorta has weakened anddilated to form a large sac. danger of such an aneurysm is that it may Tupture and cause sudden massive hemorrhage. That’s why most cardiovascular specialists today feel that such a condition deserves an operation. Forthat reason, I would suggest that you see a car- diologist at your nearest large medicalcenterfor a complete evaluation. If, in fact, you have an aneurysm, it’s questionable whether you should run the risk of having an unexpected blow outin view ofthe excellent surgical results that can be achieved with a minimum degree of risk today in the hands of skilled near who perform such procedures fre- quently. DEAR DR. LAMB —I'm a 76-year-old male and I have a swollen joint in my right big toe. I was told that this was arthritic gout and I should take six bone meal tablets saito Teduce the swelling. 1 am of the opinion that my enlarged joint is due to an overabundance of calcium in the bones and bone meal tablets will aggravate the condition rather than alleviate it. Am I right? DEAR READER — If you're correct in saying that your enlarged toe is caused by gouty arthritis, then you may need other treatment. Gout often attacks the it toe. Whenit’s an’ acute attack, the toe may red, hot and swollen and very painful. In addition, in the course of time people with gout may have uric acid salts or crystals deposit in the joint space and build up in the area. It's somewhat like lime building up in the pipes orinside the lining of the kettle. The uric acid Salts (urates) cause the joint enlargement. Bone mealtablets won't do a thing to relieve jout. I don’t know who advised you to take them but it must have been for some reason other than the treatment of chronic gouty arthritis. The goal in treating goutreally is to eliminate the excess uric acid or preventits formation. Now you are not correct in assuming that the enlarged bone is because of an overabundance of calcium. Many le seern to have this mistaken idea and theythink that excess calcium intake even causes arthritis. That’s not true at all. A person who takes morecalcium than his body needs simply eliminatesit or doesn’t absorb it in thefirst place. The calcium formations that develop around the arthriticjoint usuallyare the resultofthe efforts of damaged boneto repairitself. A bony spine, for example, develops because the bone is injured or worn away and new bone growsin the spot but it doesn’t grow in the normal shape and size of the original structure. Osteoporosis or degeneration of the bone, which is particularly common in women past the menopause and in some menatolder age, is more likely to occur in an individual on a calcium deficient diet. Many File mistakenly call osteoporosis arthritis. Other than osteoporosis, calcium haslittle or nothing to do with these disorders. Youcan’t getarthritis because you have too muchcalcium in yourdiet. Now there is one rare medical condition associated with taking too muchcalcium and that’s the person whousesa lotofsoluble antacids such as baking soda and at the sametimedrinks a lot of milk or takes a lot of calcium. This can cause calcifications in the soft tissues of the body including the kidney. Fortunately, baking soda is just not used anymoreto treat acid stomach conditions such as ulcers so we almost neversee this problem now. i) ee No 4148938 Lets is the ory snow & ice melter that reducesthe freezing damageto concrete.
