He was born in Vienna, the son of Johann Strauss the elder, who also was a popular composer and an orchestra conductor. The young Johann took instruction in violin and at the age of 19 became leader of an orchestra in a restaurant. This gave him an oper for pla ing his own waltz and dance tunes with eir appealing rhythms and simle charming melodies. After his father’s death he combinedhis father's orchestra with his own and began a concert tour of Europe. He conducted summerconcerts in Russia from 1855 to 1866. From 1863 to 1870 he conducted the balls given by the Toyal court at Vienna. Johann Strauss wrote about 500 dance compositions of which the most popular are “The Beautiful Blue Danube,” “Emperior Waltz," ‘‘Wine, Women and eee and ‘Tales from the Vienna s."" Strauss also wrote merry operettas, of which “Die Fledermaus’’ is the best known. (Win four ‘‘Tell Me Why" books, 1,500 questions answered.Illustrated.
