State Department spokesman Hodding Carter said Thursday the Peking government was informed ofthe sale, while the U.S. policy of not selling military equipment to China was reiterated. “We have decided to respond affirmatively to a numberof requests for defensive equipment from the government on Taiwan,” Carter told reporters. Carter stressed the move was in line with the publicly stated policy that the United States would resume arms sales to Taiwan after the expiration of the U.S.-Taiwan Defense Treaty on Dec. 31, 1979. People interested in volunteering should attend the meeting orcall Crisis Line, 375-5111. They can also write P.O. Box 1375, Provo. A training session for new volunteers will begin soon, according to Shelley Pollock, executive director of Crisis Line. Volunteers contribute three hours a week to the agency. Crisis Line is a non-profit organization funded by United Way of Utah County andbyTitle XX through the Utah Department of Social Services. The agencyserves asa listening post to help callers solve their problems by helping the client find solutions through personal and community resources, Pollock said. It provides confidential listening and emergency referrals. . Calls deal with drug problems, family or individuals seeking counseling, depression, suicide, spouse and child abuse, rape and loneliness.
