It will be both a beneficial movefor the club and for the NBAas well. We'rereally very happytobe in Salt Lake City.” The Jazz quickly named former Utah Stars and Houston Rockets coach Tom Nissalke to bebuild the Jazz, the worst team in the NBA during the 1978-79 season. Nissalke who coached the old Stars of the now-defunct ABA, spent the first two months of the 1979-80 season by dumping the team’s aging veterans. Hisfirst major trade was‘to trade Spencer Haywood to Los Angelesfor Adrian Dantley. The 6-foot-5 Dantiey immediately became Utah's scoring leader. averaging nearly 30 points a game. By December Nissalke had only two 1978-79 Jazz players on his squad — Jim Hardy and Pete Maravich But he benched Maravich for good in November, turning over the guardline to former Utah Stars standout Ron Boone, rookie Don Williams and four-year NBA veteran Terry Furlow, picked up in an early-season trade with Atlanta. The Jazz had won only twooftheir first 21 games. But, with Maravich on the bench, Utah suddenly got hot in December. The Jazz finished the month with a pair of wins to enter the new year with a 12-27 record. Healso set a major college single-season mark of 3.580 yardsin total offense. Wilson finished the year as the easy choice for quarterback on the UPI All America team, and tight end-punter Clay Brown made the UPI All America honorable mention team as a punter. Brown led the NCAADivisionI-A in punting with a 45.3 yard per kick average. BYU appeared headed for a 12-0 seasonlatein the fourth quarter at the Holiday Bowl, leading Indiana 37-31. But the Cougars then watched Tim Wilbur return a punt 62 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The Cougarsstill had a chance to pull out the win in the final two minutes as Wilson guided BYU downfield, scampering to the 50yard line for onefirst down. He then hit Scott Phillips with a 26-yard pass for anotherfirst down, and a 7-yard keeper by Wilson put BYU ontheIndiana 10 with 11 secondsleft.
