Christmas Secret By PAUL ROBERTS Herald Television Editor The festive spirit of Christmas heightens as the holiday draws closer. It is a time when friends and families assemble to celebrate the holiday in their own traditions. The highwa‘ become jammed with traffic ae fo jake haste to get homeforthe holiys. With some, Christmas brings parties, lots of good food and making sad hearts merry. Other people celebrate Christmas Quietly with religious observances and gift exchanges. Some are sad during the holiday season. As the merriment increases, their hearts sink into a well of depression. Those people need to find the Christmas secret. Captain Cutlass (Scott Curran), the benevolent character on Channel 20's ‘Lighthouse 20,” will find that all of his friends are deserting him on Christmas Eve — just when he wants to be surrounded with them. The locally produced holiday special, ‘‘The Christmas Secret,’ will be televised Mondayat 7:30 p.m. on Channel 20. The captain has planned a party for all his friends at the lighthouse on “Cantaloupe Island.’’ They all show for a momentbut makehasteto leave to be with their families on Christmas. Even the captain's old buddy, Bifford Winthrop, flies to Brazil for the holidays. Captain Cutlass is alone to wallow in his woe and self-pity. He turns into a sort of Scrooge, hating Christmas and all the ceria it brings. Suddenly the Caretaker of the Christmas Secret appears to teach the Captain the meaning of Christmas. Through Dickens-le visitations from magical characters, he changes his mind before the night is over. From each of his familiar friends, Captain Cutlass learns the Christmas secret, which lifts his spirit and adds new meaningtothe holiday. He learns “The spirit of giving is yours to believe. What you getisn't what you need. ten secret you seek you will know in ‘Tis better to give than to receive.” The crew at Channel 20 created a children’s show that the entire family could enjoy. The script, written by Craig Clyde. follows a pattern established by Charles Dickens in “A Christmas Carol.'' Although the production isn't the caliber Hollywood could produce, viewing ‘‘The Christmas Secret" may be an hour well spent. Learning the lesson Captain Cutlass tealizes could help children find more enjoyment in Christmas as they think more about the wishes of others than their own desires Christmas is a time of renewing devotion to God, family and friends Receiving thegifts of others graciously is as important as graciously giving Thieves Find No Seclusion A boy on the run from an orphanage, anelderly woman who shoplifts health food, two hyperactive foreign missionaries with a passion for baseball and a puppy called “Puddles” — for a very good reason — make life even more complicated for two amateur bank robbers seeking a hideout in “If I'm Lost, How Come I Found You?,’’ on ‘‘ABC Weekend Specials’ Saturday at 10 a.m. on Channel4. tokens of love to those close to one’s heart.
