Freshman Quarterback Leads Pitt Against Arizona in Fiesta Bowl TEMPE, Aiz. (UPI) — If it had not had been for Rick Trocano’s bad break in the regular season, Pittsburgh quarterback Dan Marino might have been just another Panther freshman coming west for Tuesday’s Fiesta Bow! contest with Arizona. But, when Trocano. the starter for Pitt's first seven games, went down with a hamstring injury, it was the young Marino who took over the job — and in spectacular fashion. For the season, Marino ended with 115 completions in 193 attempts, good for 1,508 yards and nine touchowns. Marino’s effort earned him a 10thplace ranking among the nation's quarterbacks in passing efficiency. In fact, Marino, with just four starts to his credit, alreadyis 10th on Pitt's all-time passing list. Trocano now ranksas oneof the most able backup quarterbacks in the nation. For his career. he is third on the school’s all-time passing list with 2.818 yards. The Christmas Day game will be played at the homefield of Arizona State, one of the six schools Marino visited as a high school senior. Marino said he had definite thoughts of going to ASU, but decided on his hometown school where he correctly thought he might get a chance to start sooner. , y.
