Each of the Spanish Fork touchdowns came after Viking turnovers as the opportunistic Dons capitalized on every scoring chance. Ross Critchfield’s fumble recovery at the Viking 48 late in the opening quarter paved the wayfor the Dons’ initial score. Spanish Fork covered the 48 ards in nine plays with Evansfinding Stokes in the end zone from 15 yards out. Key plays in the drive included an eight-yard Evans-to-Stokes toss and an ll-yard scamper by Dale Anderson. Mark Binks added the PAT and the Dons were ahead to stay, 7-0. Brady Jex set up the next Don scoring production when he intercepted a Guy Matsen aerial and raced 37 yards to the Viking eight with time running out in the first half. Evans needed only two playsas hefired a strike to Stokes on a post pattern and the senior split end made a fine catch between two defenders to increase the Spanish Fork advantageto 13-0 at the intermission as Pinks’ extra-point try was blocked. Late in the third stanza, the Dons drove 26 yards to paydirt after a Steve Adams fumble recovery to makeit 190. A pair offine dashes by Steve Griffiths preceded Evans connecting with Penalties yards a fourth-and-12 situation to keep a touchdown drive alive. The Bulldogs’ Mike Bascom and Payson’s Randee Muhlestein keep an eye on the play. (photo by Dennis Patterson) post several goal-line stands the Flyer defense began to weaken underthe constant pounding. Fumbles in the first half spelled doom for the Flyers as they gave the bali up inside their 10-yard line twice, but Timpview could capitalize on just one of those opportunities. Dixie received the opening kickoff butthe offense bogged down. However, on fourth and nine from their own 21 the Flyers were caught three yards short of the first down marker and view took over. Behind the running of backs Jordan Christiansen and Steve Bearnsonthe TBirds moved the ball down the 14-yard line. Post-game, Don mentor DelRoy Anderson tributed his offensive standouts. “Evans makes a lot of things happen for us,” he noted, ‘‘and Stokes made somesuperreceptions.'’ Benefitting from a pair of major penalties against the Dons, Pleasant Grove mountedits finest offensive production of the evening midway through the fourth period, marching 60 yards in 14 plays with fullback Mike Fryer bursting across from three yards out on a fourth-and-goal carry. Mark Thacken hauled in a Matsen pass but was stopped short onthe two-pointbid, resulting in the 19-6 final. The relentless Don defense, which limited to Pleasant Grove to just 48 yards total offense on the night, enabled Spanish Fork to control the contest. ‘It was a good defensive effort,”” Anderson analyzed, ‘‘They all played well.”’ Jex recorded secondinterception to highlight the performance, and Earl Stoneman and Deke Taylor both were impressive. Smith was downed with a backinjury after taking on most of the lugging choresin the first quarter and racking up 38 yards on eight carries. Strong then replaced him and piled up 35 yards in just five lugs, but then an arm injury sidelined him for the remainderof the game and perhaps longer. But quarterback Mark Averett took over and established a strong passing attack to complement Duncan's rushing, and Springville’s defense held the Dinos to just five first downs’io take command of the game. Despite demolishing the Dinos in statistics, the Devils had difficulty pushing the pigskin in for scores, and Carbontallied first after gaining excellentfield position when Barry Woodruff returned a punt 36 yards to the Springville 24 On the next play tailback Scott Nielson took a pitch-out and raced around the left end untouched into the end zone just moments before thefirst period ended. Woodruff kicked the extra point to put the Dinos ahead 7-0. But the rest of the contest belonged to the Devils, and with 7:30 remaining in the half Mike Miner raced 23 yards to the 38 on a punt return to initiative Springville’s first scoring drive. Strong and Duncanalternated carries to move the Devils to the Dino45, then after a four-yard loss on which Strong was injured Averett connected with Minerat the 36 for a first down. Once again the Dinos punctured Springville’s blocking and sacked Averett for a 12-yard loss to the48, but Duncan went up the middle on third down and churned to the 37. Then, on fourth-and-11 Averett stepped upoutof the pocketto elude a Dino defender, found Miner at the 25, and Miner hauled in the pass and scampered in for a touchdown. Garth Felix booted the extra to tie the score. Springville engiieered a 70-yard drive and advanced to the Carbon oneyard line with a fourth-and-goalsituation just moments before the end of the third quarter, But Duncan was stacked up by Carbon's Steve Rader ona left draw, and the Dinos regained possession. The teams exchanged possession until the two-minute mark when the Devils took over ontheir own36 after a punt. Averett then went to work on the Dino secondary, and in two plays the Devils had afrst down on the Dino five. Averett first hit John Allen atthe Carbon 41, then Miner made a beautiful, over-the-shoulder reception of an Averett bomb beforefalling at the five. Brady found Todd Wheeler wide-open over the middie for the Cavemen's firsi touchdown. Then, following a Cedar fumble, Brady threw to Hansen on a 43-yard touchdown pass and the Cavemen were out in front 14-0 after the first six minutes of action. The Cavemen then marched 64 yards for a third touchdown as Brady led speedster Jeff Evans perfectly on a 28yard scoring pass. Coach Don Mower was visibly pleased with his team's effort and said he thought the American Fork passing gamewasextremelyeffective for this oaie the season. “Our passing game worked very well, We didn't get our running game going as well as we would haveliked, Then Cedar quarterback Carey but we were pleased with the job Larson movedthe Redmien 80 yards for Hansenand Bradydid for us,’ Mower said Hansen showed why manyobservers think he could be the best prep playerin the state. He not only rushed for over 100 yards, but he caught passes good for over the century mark, too, and his defensive effort was tremendous. Second-team quarterback Daniel Smith guided the Cavemenona 59-y drive in the second quarter with a Hansen 3l-yard run setting up the a touchdown with Gary Alger skirting the right end with a scoring pass from Larsen. Carter may return in a couple of weeks but Friday night the Redmen missed his ability to scramble to the outside touchdown. Bob Mendenhall drove the final two yards and American Forkled 27-6 early in the second quarter after Keith Ciriako's extra point. While the Cavemen moved the ball well, scoring the first four times they had it, Cedar City also showed an offense of its own.
