Show CHANGE IN GULF STREAM MOVEMENT observations made from several of the atlantic liners recently seem to indicate a remarkable change in the movement of the gulf stream the cap bains of incoming vessels rise in the temperature of the water well inshore and at remarkably high des in the experience of many old sailors there has never before been so marked a change at this season of the year the conclusion of many people versed in such matters Is that the gulf stream has in some way changed its course that it has either shifted its position or widened out thus coming nearer than usual to land the effect of a change in the course of the gulf stream would obviously be of the greatest importance from every point of view it is popularly sup posed that the temperature of the eastern coast of the united states and again of the entire british isles is largely modified by the presence of the stream some scientists go so far as to argue that without the gulf stream england would be as cold and bleak a land as labrador still other scientists contend that the importance of the gulf stream is exaggerated but from either standpoint any considerable hange in the course or movement of the stream will be watched with the liveliest interest if not alarm |
