Ritter, holding court on Veteran's Day Monday, denied motions for directed verdicts of acquittal for 14 of the defendants, charged with conspiracy to sell Mexican heroin in nine states from a centralpoint in Utah. Peter Aiken, attorney for David Houston Jackson, also requested an acquittal on Jackson's additional charge of operating a continuing criminal enterprise That motion was also denied. Aiken said the evidence shows his client was a heroin supplier but does not prove that he controlled the dealers, proof the government needs to convict him of the more serious charge Prosecutor Max Wheeler said the evidence does show that none of the “dealers”’ who sold heroinin Salt Lake could get drugs without Jackson's approval and that establisheshis control.
