The President received his personalized copy at a private ceremonyin the White House. Represeiting the Bible Society were Sen. Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island, a Bible Society honorary vice president ; this wide acceptance, the Bible Society contends, even though some critics have panned the “Good News Bible’ for its use of everyday language. It is also a favorite among people who speak English as a second language. Three hundred thousand copies have beenprinted in Korea for distribution throughout Asia. A special student’s edition has beenrapidlyselling in India, Singapore, and Thailand. The presentation to President Carter maintainsa long Bible Societytradition of presenting Scriptures to U.S. Presidents to marksignificant milestones in the American Bible Society's worldwide ministry. The AmericanBible Societyis a nonprofit, nondenominational, religious organization whose sole purposeis the translation, publication, and distribution of the Holy Scriptures without doctrinal note or comment.
