Hocliey Is Now International THIS MARKS the fourth year that the Braves have held their tournaments and In Bountiful By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL and the other French. These guys are brutal to each other, no holds barred, and thats off the ice. Last week the Bountiful ice rink was turned into a small version of the United Nations as several hockey teams from other countries participated in the third annual Holiday Tournament. AT FIRST glance it would be easy to see how a team from Canada wound up ir Bountiful for a hockey event, after all they are our neighbors. But how do you figure a couple of teams from Sweden ended up in the event? Two clubs, one m the finals. THIS REPORTER made a few observations while attending several of the games and from talking to some of our foreign friends. The word friend is a great word because in no other sporting event can the feeling of friendship be as great. Strangers would start talking . about hockey and the way it should be played. Even the Salt Lake coach was pointing out that he had players who were involved in other sports. Thats unheard of in Sweden. The Canadian coaches were quick to note that the American teams dont use their bodies enough when they play. We play a strong forechecking game and they dont here. FACILITIES are always a big question but all the teams liked the Bountiful arena noting only the dressing rooms as a problem. The rink itself was one of the better ones around according to most coaches and players. Indeed hockey is a growing sport. The Salt Lake area is always adding teams, both in the high school and private teams. With teams coming in from around the world and the local players traveling around the country one can see the impact it could have on a youngsters life. THE TOURNAMENT was a success with some great hockey talent on display. In their third round game they came up against the class of 1969, the ones that won the state crown when in high school, and had to have a last second shot from Jay Clarkson to win. Larry Green and Craig Campbell had built up a ten ,1HEN IN the Bountiful title game the old guys, class of 63, took the youngsters in overtime before bowing out.
