In the A League for cham- pionship will be the Double J Quarter Horses, team against Dan Lew team. t Basketball in these parts has always been exciting and unpredictable but this year Region One has outdone itself. REGION FOUR seems to be going along as planned with the local team from Woods Cross holding the upper hand. True there are some so called upsets in this league THESE TWO races will winners for the 1978-7- 9 season that has been held at the Davis Downs Track at Lagoon :;T track in Farmington. The races are open to the public and held each Saturday afternoon during the season. THOSE SIX wins would put them in first place in Region Two and in third spot in Region Three. True those six wins werent against opponents in that league but six wins is six wins. The Vikings still havent mathemat- WINNERS in Saturday races, on Saturday, Feb. 10 i were: Futurity League, Smith Training Stables 22.26 over Smith & Percival 22.54; Noal Evans 21.18 with a bye and Green & Fausett 22.28 with a bye. Randall and McMullin 20.72 won over Dan Lewis 20.58 when Dan was disqualified for hitting a ' marker. - ically secured a state berth. What about the upsets. Take last week for example, going into the week the Bountiful club had games with Bonneville and Clearfield. Coach Mike Hall indicated they would probably get a split out of the week. That they did. But they lost to last place Bonneville and knocked off league leading Clearfield. WHAT ABOUT the Braves. They only have three wins in league play, but two of them came against Clearfield and Layton who are on top of the standings. Speaking of Viewmont the Vikes have set some sort of record of their own. Last year in the junior varsity ranks they never lost at home. This year as varsity players they are 3 at home. On the other hand the Vikings are 2 on the road. Something teams arent supposed to do is win on the road, yet the Viewmont team has a better record on foreign floors. EXPERTS PICKED Weber to win the league in the preseason polls, yet where are the Warriors. At 6 and in fifth place and extremely lucky to have that many wins. No one is ruling anyone or anything out for the race for those state berths. Bountiful is still in the race with three games retnaining. Viewmont should pick up the pieces I WINNERS in the A League were: Flannary Family 25.41 over Manuel Archuleta 26.15; Barker & Tracy 25.66 with a bye; Division 4-- 2-- de- termine the championship but nowhere near the casualty rate that Region One coaches are suffering. Consider this fact that Ron Johansen of Viewmont brought up the other day after a loss to Layton. The Vikings have six league victories under their belt and they are in fourth place in league standings. Six wins and in fourth place! 5-- Christensen and Jacoby 25.49 over Barker & Tracy A; Dick Sommers 25.50 over Marler Tire 25.64. Dan Lewis 25.19 over Ranr dall and Brown 25.41 ; Hayner, Flinders and Evans 25.36 over Fred & Kipp Cabaness 25.56; Don Vickery 25.51 over Howard Koser 25.63 and Double J Quarter Horse 25.15 over Overtaking the Wildcats on their home court is no simple matter. In fact. Bear River might say its similar to a lamb trying to rule the lions den. The Wildcats did, however, give the river folk as the lead changed hands several times in the early going. But the Wildcats supremacy was never seriously challenged as they upped their record to WILDCATS WHIP EM half-a-chan- after three straight losses to get into the state event. Clearfield and Layton are fighting it out for the title with the red hot Roy club in there with them. BOUNTIFUL MIGHT not win the league title, but with games against Layton and Roy at home, the Braves will sure play a major role in deciding who does win. 9-- 0. Steve Smith 25.41. TRYING ANYWAY Hey, you cant turn around in the middle of the block. Oh, I think I can, officer: Just give me time. DON SMITH, president of the association invites everyone to come out for the big championship races on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. np IgjfMeailielii iliGr Ecgq Each i - CLEARFIELD Going in- to last weeks games, the Clearfield basketball team had a two game lead over the pack and looked like they might run away with the title. i i i I I t AS ONE opposing coach If they win this noted, Friday the race is over. That Friday win never came though as the Falcons ran into a buzz saw in the Bountiful team, as the Braves handed the Clear-- j field club their second league loss of the season. Meanwhile the Layton Lancers were playing proba-- j bly the best game of the season for them as they handed the Vikings of Viewmont a convincing setback. THAT SETS up the battle this week when the Lancers take their act over to the Clearfield gymnasium for the game that could go a long way in determining I j i the region champion. Clearfield, despite the loss, is still in sole possession of first place in the league with a 2 mark while the Lancers are right behind tied with Roy A Lancer win would at throw the race into at least a if Roy tie, three-wa- y downs Bonneville, but a Falcon win would give them some breathing room. 9-- 8-- two-wa- y t t n BOTH CLUBS do have something in common. They have both been upset by Bountiful. In their first meeting though the Lancers handled the Falcons, which puts the revenge aspect on the Clearfield side of the ledger. In looking at this game it comes down to key matchups in each area with each club holding an edge in certain positions. IN THE backcourt heres the pros and cons: Clearfields Lariy Reid is a 'good ballhandler who likes to work the ball inside to the big people. Layton will counter LAJ hes quicker and jumps better than his counterpart. However, the Falcons dont Grab Onto One Of These i Previously Owned Units And look to Reid for offense. THE OTHER battle will be between Mark Read of Clearfield and Dave Burke of Lay-toMark showed last week he can score and Burk i is the n. threat for outside ball and pass extremely well. In the middle is where the action is and where it will be with Russell Florence going up against Gordon Anderson of Layton. Both are the main for their clubs. Both handle the ball and go to the hole extremely well for point-gette- big people. The only edge here is that Anderson is taller. ONE FORWARD matchup will be Rodger Vincent of Clearfield going head to head with Brandon Flint of Layton. Vincent is the better jumper than the two, but Flint uses his size to box out well. Vincent has been scoring more but Flint poured in 25 last week against the Vikings to show he can score. The other forward spot is a definite edge to the Lancers and could be the difference in the game. Matt Stireman of the Lancers is extremely quick and jumps well which puts a lot of pressure on Mark of Clearfield. Stireman is averaging in Wayment double figures for the league action while Wayment is sometimes overlooked by opponents. CLEARFIELD is an unselfish team. They work the ball around until they can get it inside for a good shot while Layton will anywhere. score from Look for a great ballgame. AUTO REPAIR 166 S. No one expected the finish that actually happened though as Bountiful won their first ever region wrestling title by a half point. THE BRAVES needed a win in the heavyweight cham- pionship to nip Weber for the team title. Layton was right behind with 133 points with the host Viewmont club at 1314.
