THE overwhelming evidence given here should permanently lay to rest the alternative theories that Joseph Smith or Solomon Spalding wrote the Book of Mormon, a report on the study says. Smith published the Book of Mormon in 1830 as an inspired, made from translation engravings on gold plates 1 which he found near Pal-- , myra, New York. Authorship of the book has been a point of controversy since that time, but Drs. Rencher and Larsen believe their new findings will put some of that controversy to rest WORDPRINT comparisons between the Book of Mormon and the known 19th century writings of Smith and Spalding show conclusively that neither of these persons authored the book, the scientists say. In fact, their research indicates that the book was authored by at least 24 different writers, and possibly more, whose styles bear no resemblance to that of Smith, Spalding or other 19th century writers whom they examined. DRS. RENCHER and Larsen say that three different methods of analyzing the wordprints all showed the same results the Book of Mormon had many authors. One of the tests went so far as to indicate that odds against a single author exceeded 100 billion to one, the statis- ticians noted in the report. Are the inclusions of the study final? I dont think the last word is in yet, Dr. Rencher says. BuFhe also says he is confident the research is valid and the statistical methods used in the study are sound. The best known of the studies, published in 1964 by Frederick Mosteller of Harvard University and David L. Wallace of the University of Chicago, analyzed 12 of The Federalist Papers which were of disputed authorship. By using wordprints, the study was able to determine which of the papers were written by Alexander Hamilton and which were authored by James Madison. WORDPRINTS are developed by feeding passages of 1,000 words minimum for each author into a computer and analyzing the frequency of what Rencher calls Dr. words such as and, for, it, as, be and which. That makes the wordprint a useful of tool for identification authorship, much like a fingerprint or voiceprint can be used to identify an individual, Dr. Rencher said. TO FURTHER validate the study, the researchers used three definitions of the the frequency of wordprint letters, the frequency of 38 commonly occurring words and the frequency of 42 rarely occurwords. ring Three different methods of analysis on all three kinds of wordprints supported the findings that many persons wrote the Book of Mormon and that none of them was Joseph Smith or other nine- Bound - Ideal for Rugs or Car Mats Roll-En- d & Remnants teenth century authors to whom the work has been tributed. at- OTHER RESULTS of the study by Drs. Rencher and Larsen show: There is a clear distinction between Book of Mormon authors and the seven nineteenth century authors analyzed in the study. Analyses clustering similar wordprints together show a definite separation between the two groups. The Book of Mormon authors writing in the same time period tended to have more similar writing styles than those writing in periods distant in time from each other. The translation process for the Book of Mormon was so direct and literal that every authors style was preserved. INTERIORS AND CARPET tMREROUSE 1714 No. Main, Layton |
