No one is more exemplary of this than Dave Burke. Known more for his football powers this senior just hates not to win and will do anything to help the cause. IN THEIR win last week the Lancers came out strong, hot and aggressive to knock off Roy. Senior Mark Lee, who is getting better each week, led the surge with an 18 point ef dont COACH DOUG Moon led the Lancers to their fort to go along with Burkes 12 points. This was a team effort though as reserve Stan Owens came in to add 7, Layne Sackett and Mark Vigil each r finish in the state last year, then lost all of the players via graduation. That left Doug, wiih a group of athletes that hadnt played much varsity ball. As a result the Lancers suftered ihrough a preseason slate thai saw them winning only two ballgames. Time to press the panic button right? Wrong. Tne Layton head man hung in there, learning the hard way that experience was the missing ingredient. LAYTON SORT of surprised many folks with their win over Roy but now the cat is out of the bag that the Lancers will be a team to contend with for the title. Bonneville is fighting mad over their initial loss and will need the win to get back in the picture. A Layton win would leave the Lancers in a great spot. Darts Face Strong Ogden Five For League Lead LAST WEEK that patience paid off as the Lancers went .up to Roy and came up with a league win. By DAVE WIGHAM the Lancers return home to entertain the preseason favorite Bonneville club, a club which also lost at home to Clearfield. This makes this contest a big one tor the Lakers. Now KAYSVILLE IN THE few short years they have been in the same league these two schools have developed a good athletic rivalry, and it will continue this week on the Layton floor. Bonneville, the almost exact opposite of Layton, re- turns most of their players from a year ago. Junior Cory Sylvester is a returning starter who earned first team as a sophomore. Hes a good shooter who needs like to get a few league games under their belts before they head into a crucial encounter but the Davis coaches don't have that luxury this season. WITH ONLY one game in the books this year the Darts face a big game with Ogden this Friday on the Dart home floor. Not saying this game is crucial but these could very well be the two clubs that fight it out for the title and a win on the home floor would then become a must situation. These two clubs both come-intthe game with wins from a week ago. Davis beat Bear River while the Ogden crew humbled Logan Ogden has always been a power this season in the eyes of many observers but the Darts have sort of crept up on everyone. The secret is out of the bag now though, the Darts have a strong team. - 65-5- 2 to put points on the board for 68-4- his team to win. OGDEN, WHO has only lost one game the entire season and that to an club, has many old faces back for the season. Olies Dockery has been a starter since his sophomore year two seasons ago, as one opposing coach noted when he gets it going there is no one around that is going to stop him. Inside is another Dockery, this one Greg, who has a habit of making things uncomfortable under the boards. In the Logan win he was credited with six blocked shots. Robbie Ayers is the outside shooter for the club and he showed he could light it up with 13 points a week ago. ONE NAME missing that should.be. around still is Aaron McCarthy, the son of the Weber State coach, he transferred to Judge this year to play out his senior year. Without him in the line the Tigers have become a more balanced scoring club as wit- nessed by four players figures last game. SENIOR JEFF Emery, who has seen Dockery all three years, is the leader of the Darts. They need his points to win and they got them against .... the Bears as he responded with a 26 point outing. The main strong point of the Darts though to this point in time has been their hustling style of defense. Time after time the Bears failed to get the ball inside and were forced to take bad outside shots. BESIDES THE efforts of Emery, the Dart coaches were pleased with the play of Tage Flint, who had 14, Brent Padilla with 11. Although they didn't score much the play of Glen Arnell, Pat McGill, Mike McGill and Dave Bock certainly aided in the win. Beating Bear River was a great start for the Darts but it wont be that easy against the Tigers. Coach Mike Gardner has had good success against the Ogden school though and hopes the jinx stays around for awhile. Good defense will prevail in this outing.
