Key Battle By DAVE BOUNTIFUL - When it comes to athletics no one lay-up- needs to introduce the Braves to the West High club. It seems like over the past few years these two have developed a little rivalry of their own. ' while the loser will have two loses and a long road to haul to claim the title. game against Viewmont. The Panthers are a scrappy type club who simply don't give up and keep coming at you. Lloyd showed a great outside shooting touch against the Vikes which could get the Braves out of a zone in a hurry. Layton, a team that was supposed to be quiet and finish near the bottom of the region, gained first place in its league last week with a win over Clearfield. Here Mark Lee of the Lansers hustles after a loose ball while Scott Wallace of Clearfield looks on. It's been this hustling style that has been the big tool for Layton. LAYTON ON TOP : The main problem that opposing coaches are facing when they play the Layton basketball club is that they really dont know how or who to stop. theyll playing away from home doesn't seem to bother the have IT SEEMS that this team consists of equally talented people and they take turns in having hot nights. One night, its a guard, then the center, maybe a forward.Last week the Lancers were led by senior Stan Owens in their big win over rival Clearfield as they climbed into first place in their region all by themselves. And remember these facts, they have won two big games on the road, and this is a team that only won two games in preseason. THIS FRIDAY the Layton crew could put some more distance between themselves and the field as they host the Weber crew that sports a 1 record in league action. Then on Tuesday of the following week they travel up north to battle the Skyview team which currently stands at Layton played up and down" in the win over the Clearfield five as the Lancers jumped out to an early lead then saw it disappear just as the half ended. 2-- The second half was for awhile but in the end they came up on the winning side of the coin. OWENS LED the club in scoring with 19 points, ten of those came in the first period as the Falcons weren't ready for a big game from him. Scoring leader on the squad and in league play Mark Lee finished the night with 18 and then Dave Burke found the range in the second half for his ten points. Coach Doug Moon is quick - to point out though that without the play of Layne Sackett, Mark Vigil and Jeff Pierce the club wouldnt have won this outing. see-sa- UP money IN FACING the Weber club the Lancers will be looking at one of the best outside shooters in the area in Van Fuller who hit from long range for 21 last week. Inside the Warriors look to Drew Skeen who is a physical type player, he finished with 22 in the win over Roy. In this contest the Lancers have an advantage in quickness and theyll need to utilize this in order to win. The big people up front are as tall but,, not as broad but they need to be ready to battle for IN PULLING off the win on the Rams floor last week the Braves found a great help on the inside with Brad Jacox. You wouldn't have believed yourself unless you saw him play last week. He played as well as any pivot man could have. The winner will be right in the thick of the race for the title while the loser will drop back a little in the pack. Should be a great contest with size against quickness although the Braves arent the slowest team by any means. Brad wheeled and dealed inside and ended the night with 16 points. THEN WHEN the Lancers travel to Cache Valley theyll be looking up all night as they give away a lot of height to the Bobcats. Sky View was the preseason favorite in this league but they have been plagued by mistakes. Jon McKenna and Eddie Benson are the leaders on the club, both scored 28 last week. A couple of wins would put the Layton crew in the drivers seat. Weber is coming into the Lancer pit where Layton is strong, and even going on the road doesnt seem to bother these spirited players. Many felt that with the loss the seniors from last season the Lancers would suffer a down think again, the Lanyear cers are for real. Parrish up front. Then too. if White plays. Viewmont will have to be concerned over the speed and pressing defense of the Cats, the guards will need to handle the ball well. OODS CROSS used a press and some great shooting to hand South their third loss as Terrin Hallows and Rodger Lowe picked up the scoring from Earnshaw who usually leads the Cats in that department. Hallows was especially hot in the first half when the Cubs seemed to be keying on Earnshaw. Then Lowe got hot from the outside and the route was on. Fielding a small team. Both should be ready this week. Reggie Wilson and Chris Nemelka, who had a great overtimes to those leading work. We had no trouble getting the ball inside and we hope the same is true this week. We know we're bigger up front and hopefully that will be the difference." COAC H MIKE Hall of the Braves feels that the football games of late ha ve added to the rivalry quite a bit. They have probably made it more than it should be. Basically though 1 dont think either team is using the football thing as a psychological thing. All the incentive these two basketball clubs need is the fact that they are tied for second place in the region with identical 1 records.
