Show WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 14, 1980 NORTH DAVIS LEADER, FEBRUARY 14, 1980 REFLEX-DA- VIS nn SdAL Beehive Racing Results Cutter and chariot races for the Beehive State Racing 11 Tougii Association were held Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Lagoon race track in Farmington. THE RACES are held weekly at the track beginning at Breed 1 p.m. and are open to the By DAVE VV1GHAM In watching last weeks region wrestling tournaments throughout the county one thing that stood out in my mind was the number of injuries. IVE SEEN these events before but last week 1 saw more injuries in one meet than I have in the past six or seven years. I got to thinking about all those accidents and started to inquire of some of the coaches as to their feelings why there were so many hurt wrestlers. TO NAME a few Blaine Rayl of Viewmont sullered a dislocated shoulder, Russ Hammer of Bountiful was cut above the eye and went to the hospital. Mark Tate of Woods Cross had a neck injury and Kevin Freestone of Viewmont reinjured a knee. In the case of three of the wrestlers they had already won enough matches to qualify for the state meet but in the Rayl case the injury ended his season. SOME PEOPLE pointed to the fact that wrestlers are getting bigger, stronger and quicker as one explanation. True these guys, while big and bulky, demonstrated some exceptional speed on the mat. Another explanation was from a coach who noted that many of the holds and moves really put a strain of muscles, especially up around the shoulders. THEN ONE coach. Steve Sanderszon of Viewmont, saw the officiating as a cause. "1 know in the case of Rayl, the official should have stopped it. and could have before the injury occured. When a wrestler is slammed to the mat in an illegal hold, twice, something is going to happen to that wrestler. He went on to add that it is a judgment call by the officials, but obviously with a separated shoulder to show for it someone used poor judgment. It was near heartbreaking to see the likes of Blaine Rayl who has worked hard for several months to be out of the state tournament due to an injury. These guys all work hard and when the region was over and some didn't make the event in Salt Lake City this week, it was sad to see the parents trying to console their sons. WRESTLING is a tough sport, it takes a special breed of athlete to compete. They are often overlooked by the students and media alike, not in the limelight like the basketball club. But to these wrestlers, my hat goes off to you, your dedication and really comes through. Congratulations to those who competed in this rugged sport and good luck to all of those wrestling in the state meet this week. self-desi- public.
