The Arnold Palmer and Jack Nieklauv eras are over: just as the peal Sam Snead and Pen Hogan days are legend, so are the Palmer and Nicklaus years. I OK A time H seemed that Johnny Miller, or Ben Crenshaw or. of late. Tom Watson, would lake over and he in obvious command. But each of their stars faded somewhat, or at least were inconsistent. Who is to he the new Jack Nicklaus. the new Arnold Palmer? Many were seeking the answer to that at ihe recent Masters won in 1977 hy Watson, who was then though on his way to legendary dominance in the sport. IN 1977 Watson won not only the Masters, hut the Bing Crosby, San Diego Open and Nicwmonl's Steve Knighton crosiwn home plate to ttcore a run for the Vikings but it wann't enough an the Vike lost this contest to West and then in the finals to American Fork. Then this last week they were knocked oITby American Fork in the finals tournament. of the state 3A AS IT turned out one pitch meant the difference in the title game last week as a two run home run in the sixth inning hy the Cavemen's catcher was the difference in the 1 contest. The Vikings had scored first in the third inning when short 3-- winner. stop Mike Cook drove Rob Moosman across the plate w ith a single to center. That lead held up until (he fifth inning when the A.F. club tied it up with three hits in a row. Then came the sixth and the fatal blow. VIEWMONT had its chances as it had men on second and third with no one out in the forth, but was unable to score. And in the sixth inning when n ground ball became the topic of conversation. With runners at first and third and no one out Kyle Morrell hit a slow grounder toward the first base side of the infield. The first baseman missed the ball which then hit the runner going to second. The base umpire ruled that since the first baseman had a chance to field the ball before the runner was hit, everyone was safe. However the home plate umpire ruled that the second baseman could have By DAVEWIGHAM SALT LAKE CITY -- Not to be outdone by the other sports in the school the Layton baseball team came up with its best ever showing in a state baseball tournament as the Lancers came away with third place honors in the recently completed 4A tournament. THIS BROUGHT to an end a remarkable athletic year for the Layton school which saw its basketball team become one of the Cinderella stories of the year, a football team that lost out in the state semifinals after a great year. The most remarkable thing about the entire year is that for the most part the names stayed x STATE CHAMPS ByDAVEWIGHAM SALT LAKE CITY ;.;Grant Belnap scored 37 goals 'this past season in soccer. But r .the one hell remember the : 'most during his life will be that : last one. That set the stage for what supposed to be the title ::igame on Monday at Skyline All the Braves had to do .was win two games from the Davis team, a fete that no other ; soccer club had accomplished. : Tn fact last year the Braves had to beat Highland twice to win ; the crown, and after winning the first lost the second. BELNAP AND company had other thoughts about the y . season ending on Monday though, as he scored three goals to give the Braves a 2 victory, setting up the rubber match for the title on Tuesday. 3-- the same. Only the sport changed. True there were Bountiful took two straight from rival Davis in close battles to claim the state 3A soccer title last week. Here Bountiful goal keeper Craig Tingey gathers in the ball while Benny Hammerle of Davis makes the charge as several Braves watch the action. The win over the Darts for the championship was anything but a one man show though, as the Braves could brag several heroes in the win. There was goalie Craig Tingey, who saved a penalty shot with about IS minutes to go in the game to preserve the win. THERE WAS Neville Allen who was assigned to play man on man with the Dart field general Brian Bacon and did his job admirably. And finally there was the entire defense that held the Darts scoreless, a job that sounds easier than it actually is. The goal came in about the 31st minute. Belnap remembered it well. The ball went from the halfback up to Niel (Jefferies the right winger for the Braves). I looked in the middle and saw an opening. I ran to it and he got the ball to me. I didnt really place the ball or hit it hard. It was more half and half. NO MATTER what kind of shot it was it got past Barry Phelps the Davis goalie, and the Braves were on their way. First year Coach Rick Call came up with the plan to play Bacon one on one. We noticed that he set up their offense in the first game which He did it with they won shooting and scored a couple of goals. With Neville on him he still ran the show but with passing. 4-- 3. IN THE second half the Darts pushed everything forward in an effort to get the tying goal. They came close several times. Winger Hokan Olauson was the most dangerous as he hit the post once and was fouled in the penalty area, giving the Darts a penalty shot. In this situation the goalie has to guess to which side the shooter is going and dive. This time Tingey guessed right and made the save. It didnt surprise Belnap though. Craig is a good goalie. They had missed a penalty the day before and were using a different shooter so I still thought we had a It was the type of game where spectators felt it was a shame that one of the teams had to lose. The Darts can be proud of their showing. They had a young side with the likes of Bacon, only a freshman, and Chris Johnson. The Darts will be a club to consider in the future. Others who played well were Phelps, Benny Charlie Fulks, Shawn Ham-merl- e, Stone and Chris Nielsen. FOR THE championship chance that they wouldn't score. Mark had been involved in several pressure-football and basepacked ball games so he was the logical choice. The senior righthander responded with a seven strike out 3 win over the Tigers. If Vigil was tough on the mound, he was just as tough at the plate as he came up with a couple of hits to drive in two 6-- runs. Kurt Gallegos, and Kurt and Kennedy also came up with a couple of hits apiece while Dave Burke had a double for an RBI. Lance Brightshue had a triple for an RBI. Clarence Holmes and Joey Castillo also had key hits in the win. THE LANCERS ran into some trouble in the second round as Kearns handed the local squad an 4 setback. Kurt Kennedy and Dave Burke pulled mound duty for the day. Both also hit home runs for the Lancers while Vigil again came up with a couple of hits. YES, CLOUDS extend ab- out twice as high at the equator as they do at the poles. And this is caused by the rotation of the earth. At the poles, or at the top of the earths axis, there is relatively little centrifugal force. But at the equator, where the earth is thickest, the centrifugal force is great and the layer of gases around the center of the earth is literally thrown outward by the greater force, and turning speed. IT IS estimated that clouds at the equator extend as high as 50,000 feet or slightly higher above the surface of the earth. But at the poles clouds rarely reach up more than 25,000 feet into the troposphere. Knowing this, airline pilots can always fly above weather in the polar regions, though this is still not possible in other latitudes. 1. In what country did American football originate? ' 2.
