Show imi 1 Game Ulah-BY- U Misses Billing By DAN E WIGHAM Mid Poind THE ROYALS present numerous problems for the Clearfield bunch. One of the biggest is their height advantage. Roy has a couple of players who are over the 6'5" range in Robb Thomas and Steve Scholtec. while the Falcons dont have a sole with that height. Roy also has some quickness on their side with the likes By DAVE WIGHAM LAYTON This week marks the halfway point of region action for the clubs in Region One and both Clearfield and Layton are fighting for a spot in the 4A state tournament. CURRENTLY heading into of Kirkwood Friday's action, Clearfield, Bonneville and Roy all find themselves on top of the standings with 1 records. Weber is next in line at 2 with Layton hanging in there with a mark with the Sky View club on the bottom with a (M mark. This week will tell the story in regards to just who will be on top after the dust settles as the three tops clubs will get a shot at each other. Clearfield especially has their own hopes in their hands as they play the two clubs that they are tied with in the next six days. McAulley. MEANWHILE THE Lancers play host to Sky View on Friday and then travel up to Roy to battle the Royals. The Falcons are now in full flight with their win over Sky View last Friday and they couldn't have picked a better time to play their best ball than right now. First on Friday the Falcons travel up to Roy and battle the same Royals that Clearfield finds themselves tied with. Coach Craig Hansen has CLEARFIELD though has a well balanced attack that looks for the good shots with their patient offense. Three Falcons are in double figures for league action with Troy Nye at 16.5. Dewey Pratt at 15.5 and Freddie Cook at 14.5 per outing. Kyle Moosman. Mike Johnson and Greg Boren have all been playing well and are capable of big scoring nights. Defense is the name of the game and no one does it better than these Clearfield folks. molded this group into a great team outfit. They know it takes all of them to olav well to win. BONNEVILLE is out for revenge against Clearfield since the Falcons won game one In that win Cory Sylvester saw limited action with illness. The Lakers are running hot right now but don't look for Clearfield to lie down. Layton will be after win number two this Friday with winless Sky View coming to town. Layne Sackett, averaging 21 .2 points per game, leads the way with Jeff Pearce at 19.0 and Dave Barney scoring at a 11.0 clip. The Lancers played well for three periods against Weber but then went cold with Sackett pouring in 29 points. BOTH LAYTON and Clearfield have strong individuals in the tournament as well as well balanced teams. Here is how the coaches look at the individual weight classes for the region event, (14-7- ) Hunter (1 TO NAME the things he listed, and I quote "(I) national recognition; (2) the WAC title: and (3) possibly a shot at the national championship." Come on John, a shot at the national title in January. Thats like saying the View-mo- and Bountiful game meant a state title for the winner. I concede on the recognition thing. With their No. 8 ranking on the line, a loss would have dropped the Utes out of the picture. But on the other hand, the 8th ranked club is suppose to beat the 15th ranked club on their home floor. THE LANCERS should knock off Sky View and then face Roy on Tuesday. The I CONCEDE a little on the WAC title thing, although one Royals beat Layton in game one by points but the game was closer than that score would indicate. Tom Watson. Brian Cunningham and David Leach are also having good years for Coach Doug Moon. Layton has come close to beating the top guns on several occasions and this week could very well be their turn. CLEARFIELD needs the wins to stay in the hunt for the region title while Layton needs them to stay in the hunt for a state berth. the DePaul and Syracuse game, the Utah and BYU contest wasn't even mentioned, and you'd think it would be with a national title in the handing. WHAT REALLY got to me was the fact that all week on the three television stations, although Channel 4 wasn't as bad. the sports people ignored everything else to build up this battle. Everyone with the exception of the coaches' w ives was asked what they thought of the game. From the outset you could tell that the players were reading preprogrammed answers. None of them was going to say anything that could find its way into the opponents' locker rooms. High school games were ignored for the most part on Tuesday and very little was said on the Friday affairs. THEN LIKE most games that receive this pregame build up the game for the most part was not a great one. The only thing that made it tolerable was the fact one didn't know who was going to win. Neither team played well. It wasn't a case of which team would win. rather it was which team would screw up the least and win. Utah, players now have the idea that they won despite playing poorly while the Cougars figure they played terrible and only lost by four points. IF THIS game had national s then championship the basketball level of the country is way down this year. over-tune- A message in the public interest from Davis North Medical Center will battle Dan of Bonneville for top. honors in this weight. Im a sports fanatic from the word go but these guys went way overboard with this game. Heading the list, head and shoulders over everyone, was John Mooney of the Tribune. His article on Saturday morning took the cake. In this article he tried to list the things on the line. 55-4- THEN ON Tuesday they head up to Bonneville to battle the Lakers, a team they beat at Clearfield earlier in league play. Roy is coming off their only loss of the year in region play and they aren't likely to want to drop two in a row. Theyll be fighting mad this week to regain sole possession of the top spot.
