Show f WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY REFLEX-DA- VIS 6, t r i 1981 ss ZLL Spencer DeGraw Is DHS President LM rfi Spencer DeGraw, Farming-to- n, an outstanding student and athlete of Davis High School has been elected president for 1981-8- 2. DURING THE Davis Coun- ty Invitational of all By DAVE WIGHAM want to say up front right at the start of this thing that I really do admire the little league coaches around the area. All those people that spend endless hours with little guys and gals. I only wish they would know what they are doing. ITS NOT the fault of those parents that get to coach the teams but rather of the organizations that throw them out like lambs to the lions. People who run the leagues should arrange clinics for the coaches. I realize some do, but then some people who know how and what to coach can at least put them on the right path. I have a little league soccer team right now and it amazes me as I watch other games how little the kids, and the coaches, know about the game. Some of them dont even know that when you kick off in soccer you dont kick it to the other team. American football gives you the choice to kick or receive but it really isnt meant to be that way in soccer. I I SEE the coaches on the field showing and actually taking the players to their positions. This should be done at practice not in a game. Offsides in soccer is one of the most basic rules of the game, but I dare bet over half of the coaches in the league dont know or at least understand the rule. Before you think Im picking on just the soccer coaches lets turn our attention to the baseball coaches. I HAVE yet to pass a practice involving little league players where there isnt some adult on the mound throwing fastballs or is hitting. What do the kids get out of seeing some frustrated adult showing he can strike out an eight year old, or that he can get a base hit off of some hot shot nine year old pitcher. True again, there are some baseball coaches that know what is going on and can teach the kids, but there are still too many of them that dont. These are the guys that the league should help. THERE IS a kid over in my area that came home from practice and told his father that his coach had explained a rule to him. Basically, what the coach told the kid was that everytime he throws over to first base in an attempt to pick off a runner he must first step off the back of the rubber. Well the kids dad gently told his son that that wasnt right, so the kid being himself, told his coach what his dad had said at the next practice. The coach then informed the kid that this rule was from Little League, and his dad thought maybe it was a special rule for this age group, on up through the major leagues. first. isnt entirely the coaches fault, had the league set up a clinic with one of the local high AGAIN THIS school coaches the problem might have been avoided. Even without a clinic the high school coaches I know would be more than happy to answer any questions. A Little League football is in the same boat. With the injury factor in this sport, I personally would want to know what the coach of my son was doing and his qualifications. FOR YEARS it seems the biggest complaint about little leagues has been the lack of knowledgeable coaches. Yet at the same time the leagues do very little to prepare a father to coach. Some give the coaches a book on how to coach, others may even offer clinics, but they dont make it mandatory that they read or take a class. Parents should begin to take an interest in their kids coach. Find out what he does at practice and why? Too many times the parents look at practice as an hour or two without the kids and thats all. KEEP UP the good work coaches, your time and effort is appreciated, but for the sake of your kids, if you have a hard time, contact someone who knows the game. Call the guy who got you to coach in the first place and get a name and number of someone who can help. Lets start these little guys off on the right foot. doesnt, or at least didnt know, was that this father happens to be an exprofessional pitcher who threw for years in the DodWHAT THIS poor coach ger organization. This incident isnt to point out that father knows best, but rather that if this coach is telling his kids the rules of the game he had better find out what they are Junior High Athletics Are Still Going Strong Junior high athletics in Davis County are alive and well.
