Show DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER, SOUTH DAIS ADVERTISER, JUNE 1(0981 ROCKFORT SCHOOL One room school house from Rochort Utah constructed in 1870. an early small Rockport community settlement in the Summit County area is now drowned in the Wanship Dam, but our little schoolhouse, constructed of "squared-off- " pine logs cut from the mountains that beautiful surrounding pioneer settlement, remains as a fine example of the schools in the middle and late 1800's that were located in the outlying communities. This building was an LDS meeting house as well as a school until the settlers could afford to build a church. Children, in addition to studying by kerosene lamps, in the cold weather, would usually huddle around stoves where the heat was intense near the stove, but never could reach far enough into the comers to warm the In school room adequately. addition, students had the extra privilege of braving icey weather when it came necessary to use an unheated outhouse located a short distance from the school. But Horace Sorenson, who had a vision of the future through preserving the past was not about to let the church be destroyed.
