Show DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JUNE 10, 1981 WEEKLY REFLEX Clearfield Looks At Funds For and the Philippines June 19 as members of the full-tim- A NEW budget must be approved by June 30th and a decision made by the city council to either add to the staff or leave as is, could drastically affect the immediate future of its vastly improved and rapidly growing recreation program. BUT THOMAS cant do Bountiful native and has The final area Thomas talked about was the 17 acres that Steed Park will offer. With a bunch of activities at Central Park and at Fisher Park, there is no way he can conduct all three areas by himself. it all by himself. The program has simply expanded and grown much to fast for just one to handle. I feel about the same way e he does in that if a new person is not brought on board, the program could mellow out and a lot of the ideas Roger has would have to be tabled for a while. ly In- toured with the International Folk Dancers through the Soviet Union and the eastern European countries. The 32 dancers in BYUs International Folk Dancers are selected from hundreds of BYU students involved in the dance universitys folk ' program. THE STUDENTS on the folk dance teams are noted for THE FOURTH area Thomas commented on was the large increase of use of the citys facilities. Weve had to organize some system to reserve fields for practice and playing. There isnt an evening go by that someone isnt using a field. Without someone to help manage this, wed have chaos, he said. Clearfield police officer and sports enthusiast Ron Campbell has nothing but praise for the job Thomas has done, Roger has done so much in such a short period of time. There are many around this city that are grateful for the job he has done, said Campbell. full-tim- THE NUMBER one reason is the increased demand for youth sports. Participation has grown 50 to 100 percent in some areas, areas such as baseball, soccer, girls softball and wrestling. The number two reason centers around adult leagues. Before Thomas came, the city never had an adult league and now they are exploding. Men and women play softball, flag football, basketball and volleyball league is soon to begin. BUT I hope they look at all the facts and realize that in my opinion if tax money needs to be spent for people, there probably isnt a better way money can be spent than in a recreation program. A good program will affect almost every household. I sincerely believe that if we dont get another person the program could move backwards from this point, Thomas concluded. The Folk Dancers have toured Europe each summer for the past 16 years and will be making their second appearance in Japan this summer. WEARING a variety of authentic costumes, the group will perform a kaleidoscope of dances, songs, rituals and folklore in a brilliant array of color d and precision, infrom Japan, dances cluding Hungary, Mexico and the U.S. The New York Times described the group as "bright shiny, and enthusiastic. They have folk dances from a dozen countries in their repertoire and present them with the relentless gaiety of a color spread in the National Geographic. high-spee- Service Check The Davis Co. But in an objective view the council will have to evaluate where the top priorities are and Thomas feels they are doing it in a very conscientious way. Thomas recently appeared before the Clearfield City Council and supported his reasoning why e another helper was needed. He broke his theme into five areas. A JAN IS from Kaysville and is a freshman at BYU majoring in dance. Duggar, a senior at BYU majoring in English, is a Maybe you can already feel what Thomas feels, like you wish there were three of you being able to be everywhere at once. BUT THOMAS has great aspirations for the future, though. Those who know him realize there is much, much more he hopes to accomplish and also realize he wont give up. i BYU. SPECIAL events have been unique and varied. Easter egg contests, a Lagoon Day, turkey contests, pumpkin carving contests and baking contests have been just a slight part of the past. Their popularity has been tremendous. Roger Thomas, who came to Clearfield via Salt Lake Citys recreation program two years ago, has devoted time and heart to a program that is presently comparable or better to those in surrounding communities. Prior to his hiring on you would have been totally out of place trying to compare Clearfields program to one such as Roys. P ternational Folk Dancers at PARTICIPATION among the adults has literally reached the melting point. They have been attracted by the smooth and organized way in which the leagues have been run and of course the fact they are closer to home. The number three area that needs continued support is the special events and classes. Classes have usually been conducted only during the summer but recently more townsfolk have asked they be taught all year round. There is little question that Clearfield city needs to e recreation staff but the big add to their the funds to do it. have Do they question is, w.
