Show I WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, REFLEX-DA- VIS I NORTH DAVIS LEADER, AUGUST 13, 1981 Local i 4 By DAVE UTGIIAM more and has a great future ahead Davis County basketball players got a PROVO first hand look at some of the top talent in the nation this past week. They participated in the annual BCI BOUNTIFUL p V of her. Vance Christiansen came away y. Local favorite Steve Poulson was tied for third with two other golfers at one under 70. Larry Becher and Jeff Green were next with one over 72. In the Net division the winner was Scott Christiansen with a 64 which was one better than Dan Psarras and Steve Rigby. THE LOCALS dropped their first two encounters teams although they had a good showing in both games and could have won both of them. College scouts are talking like this is the best crop of seniors in Utah for some time. As one scout from Weber State noted, "there are about eight good players this year that could play col'ege ball. Taylor of Davis is a definite as is White of Viewmont. Then Mabey of Viewmont and Johnson of Woods Cross both played well here and have the colleges looking. Bell of Bountiful is another with TODD BEST shot a fine 74 to claim top spot in the first flight. Mike Romney was second with 75 followed by Scott Halversons 77; and Jeff Maddox and Steve Nelson tied at 79. Net winner in first flight went to Robert Tillotson with a 55. Dave Morandi, Jack Poulson and Joe Turley tied for second with 63. prospect." INDEED BRIAN Taylor proved he can play with anyone during this tournament. Some felt he was too slow for smaller, quicker guards but he showed that he has deceptive speed. He led the club in scoring. White got a lot of attention from opposing teams so he was held down somewhat. That left Mabey and Johnson open and they took advantage of it and ' played extremely well in the event. SALT LAKE City Cory Sylvester of Bonneville threw a touchdown pass to Ken Zalict of South with less than two'minutes left to give the Utah side a 6 football. victory over Nevada in Davis County was well represented and the three participants played well. Kyle Morrell was all over the field while playing safety for the Utah side, he had one interception and numerous tackles. Mike Woodbury caught several balls from his tight end spot and was effective in blocking. ' 20-1- PHOENIX Speaking of the BCI tournament, the girls get into the act here this week with their national tournament. Davis County is well represented on this elite eleven gat side. Jennifer Beene, younger sister of BYU standout, Jackie, of Clearfield, is on the side as is junior sensation Maren Hansen of Woods Cross. Maren burst into the sports scene in Utah last year as a sopho all-st- ar ON THE sad side, Lance Hill of Davis injured his ankle in practice this past week and saw limited action. Hill was missed in the secondary as Nevada seemed to pick on one side of the Utah defense. Lance did get in on some kickoffs. T : jL ' , , .n ' ' , .4&1" ,,''4. ' v ' & W'. Of the rightfielder he said, The most underrated player on this team. Then the guy next to him in center said, the most underrated' player in the country. Lets wait and see what the local clubs draw in. How many fans will show up in Toronto at $7 a shot to see the last place Blue Jays. ANOTHER THING that got to me in the game was the fact that they kept coming up with all-st- ar reasons why certain infielders were missing the ball. Hes use to artificial turf and the ball bounces different on real grass. For heavens sake the guy is making a million dollars a year to stop ground balls and were suppose to believe he isnt good enough to play on real grass. SPEAKING of the game its time to have a little quiz to see if you were really listening to what all-st- ar Joe and Tony were saying. Here are some of their descriptions of certain ballplayers. Try to match ' them with the players. The answers will appear later in this column, but dont cheat.
