Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, OCTOBER 29, 1981 Horsely, Smuin, ipark Davis Dari Volleyball Falcons Place Third; Wilcox Snares Seventh By KEITH DUNCAN KAYSVILLE -- r- Three big reasons why Davis volleyball has temperatures boiling is in Allison Horsely, Carla Smuin and Julie Peterson. These gals have performed together since seventh grade and now in their final year at Davis, are something short of unstoppable. team captain, Richard Bouchard. Bouchard ran despite almost unbearable pain in his leg. He is preparing for surgery which was planned before the region meet. By KEITH DUNCAN CLEARFIELD Coach Scott Tennis, whose Clearfield cross country squad, missed second place by a single point in the region cross country championships commented that he was generally pleased with the teams performance. RICHARD'S courage helped the team. He was sacrificing for us all the way. The other kids could see it and it helped them to push them a little harder, said Tennis. Bouchard was sixth in the race for Clearfield and 25th overall. Mike Rhoades was 27th overall and seventh for the Falcons. THERE ARE some things that the fans never hear or seldom read about. But it's those unnoticed things that can make a coach feel proud about a teams performance, said Tennis. He first brought out the fact that each of the schools top five runners improved their times over the last time they ran the Layton course. CLEARFIELD completely dominated the junior varsity portion of the race. Hall Scholfield, Duane Rock and Bruce Munson finished second, third and fourth respectively in the race with Todd Denman taking sixth and Dean Gallegos grabbing eighth place. BILL WILCOX was the Falcons top finisher, narrowly missing fourth place by ten seconds. He settled for seventh as only a junior. Darin Lewis was eighth in the region meet and improved his time by some 19 seconds. Glen Coy, a sophomore, finished 11th overall and improved his old time by a whopping 60 seconds. i LAYTON - Bonneville, behind the strong running of Chester Begay, took the JULIE PETERSON We Reserve The Right To Limit Quantities Lumber Store competition outside the league. Better Bays Ahead For Falcon Football By KEITH DUNCAN CLEARFIELD The following paragraphs about Clearfield football are mainly designated for the future. Perhaps youll want to clip this one out and save it till August 28th next year. THOSE OF you w ho are associated with Clearfield High football, the coaches, the fans, the players and everyone else, probably just as soon me not talk about the 81 season. Its sorta been frustrating for everyone. The Falcons wanted to w in more. They didnt plan on being overall and 5 in league. No plans on that but its something that really happened and though its not a happy subject, it will be remembered for good or bad. 0-- -8 THERE IS one solid and certain fact though, that could put a smile on your face if you love football and would like to see Clearfield teams do better. Take a look ahead to next year, you'll find what Im talking about there. Consider a junior varsity team that posted a 2 record this past year and were 1 as sophomores. Look a little further and you'll find a sophomore squad that beat a solid Layton team on the final day 6 and ended up with a 3 mark. SMUIN IS also a basketball player and track participant. She runs sprints and throws the discus and javelin. Ann works hard. If she doesnt know something she will find out. She is so easy to relate to. With Ann and Lori, I feel we have the two best coaches in the state, said Smuin. varsity coaches gathered their players together and had possibly one of the finest sessions an athletic team at Clearfield has ever had. John Flint delivered one of the greatest talks Ive ever heard," said Dick Michels, Flints coaching partner in the JV ranks. You could have heard a pin drop, it was something, he said. HORSELY SAID Avondet could relate not only on the court but could understand problems off the court. She is great to talk to," said Horsely. CLEARFIELD then went on to capture their next three games before losing to Bonneville. clash For three quarters the Bonneville-Clearfiel- d was close. But when the Lakers exploded on a 99 yard run that broke the Falcons back and more important, dampened their spirits. 7-- 6-- ON THE surface that may not really mean much, but after taking a closer look it might excite you. This years junior crop is a dandy, they are win- seniors are happy with their success this year. Their only wish is that volleyball would receive the recognition that other sports do. TO FINISH the season, Clearfield went on to defeat Sky View, Layton, Cottonwood and Roy. To add to a solid junior varsity group are several solid juniors w ho were some of the top players on the varsity level. Try J. C. VonCollin for one. This talented junior was good enough to take first team honors on the first annual Davis County squad named this week by the newspaper. All-St- ROBERT Sherwood, the Falcon quarterback is another. He started in more than half of the Falcons games and threw several times to another talented junior in Roger Hill at tight end. Mark Wilson, junior, handled the punting duties for Clearfield all season long. He wasnt noted for his average but more for his poise under control. ners. They have always been w inners. Despite sticking by their fellow seniors, who could manage only one victory this fall, they went out and turned in a beautiful season. DEAN FOL'LGER, J V running back, is considered by the Clearfield coaches as one of the junior backs in the area. He gives Coach Brent Hancock a lot to smile about. He was unstoppable in the IT WAS just last Tuesday night that I was talking to former Clearfield basketball cojch, Roger Reid. He asked me about how the football team was doing and being very honest I had to tell him how exciting it was to sec the juniors and sophomores have so much success, despite the failure of the senior class. clash and also had a great game against Bonneville. He w ill start next season off after ending 81 on the right foot. He scored a touchdown against the Lancers on the varsity level. Todd Blair played varsity in kick off situations and will team with Foulgcr in the Falcon backficld. He is considered good. Though he doesn't coach at Clearfield any longer, he still loves the school and hates to see anyone suffer through a losing campaign. HE DID SAY a few things however, that I remem- ber. He was impressed with the junior crops records for the past two seasons and said there wasn't any reason that those kids could do some great things as seniors. He commented that it was important to have a winning attitude behind you. Winners hate to lose and they'll do everything possible to stay on top," said Reid. Of course the BYU coach know s none of these kids but he has been around coaching enough to know how winning squads are built.
