Two games Darrel Welling, Matt Thornley, Ron Hill and Jay McCaan have demonstrated their ability to catch the ball and Schmutz has shown his critics he can throw the thing. ' With all due respect to the Bountiful players the best allround player on the field will be Roy quarterback Wade Jacklin, the. son of the head man. Wide is the man for the Royals on offense, he runs their option attack with the precision of a fine watch. HE IS a triple threat in that he can run, throw and read defenses with the best of them. Not only is he tough on offense he also plays a strong safety on defense, it was his interception in the closing minute of play last week that preserved the win over Alta. To run the triple option with the success of the Royals a team must have three good backs. Jacklin is one! The other two are fullback Eric Aragon and halfback Cary Ashley , both are excellent high school runners. - . UP FRONT the Royals arent big, they are huge. Bountiful has played only two of the present Top Six teams in All of their opponents were in By KEITH DUNCAN ROY, HEADED by the veteran head coach, Ernie Jacklin and Bountiful led by highly successful Paul Waite, will meet for the eleventh time in their prep careers. But in all their meetings, the Friday afternoon clash for the coveted state championship couldnt be more meaningful. , Jacklin probably wants to win this game more than any in his career at Roy. He has been in the playoffs before and even played for the state championship, J (last year against Bonneville.) HE KNOWS the time is now for the Royals to win a state championship, something the school has never done. His son Wade, is now a senior, and he would like nothing more than to bow out with a state title Wades senior year. Even though this will be Wades final year as a Royal, it probably wont be Ernie's. There has been a rumor echoing around that Ernie plans on retiring after this year. To that. Ernie himself, just chuckles. Being a pretty close friend of Ernie 1 know how he loves this game and really cant see him bowing out yet.. WAITE LEADS the series between the two coaches. 6--4 but Jacklin has won the last two in a ' row. But before that Waite and his Braves had won five Ip a row. ; Another piece of trivia connected w ith this battle is that Waite has never lost to the same team tw ice in the same year. In 1975 his Braves lost to Jim McMahon and. the Royals in the first game but came back to beat them 33;I4 in the state quarterfinals. - TWO YEARS ago Bountiful lost to W'oods Cross .during season play but later beat the Wildcats to get into the playoffs. Ironic about that season is that the Braves also lost to West 28-- 0 during the year but came back to beat the Panthers 14-- 0 in state play, r The list of trivia goes on.
