Show J V. cEKLY REFLEX DECEMBER 23, 1981 DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, DECEMBER 23, 1981 KAYSV1LLE You might be interested to know that for every fancy pass that Brian Taylor dishes out there are a string of good marks in his honors English class. And too. Brian may score a bunch of points every Friday night, but he collects just as many A's in his algebra class to back it up. THE 64 SENIOR guard is d a basketball player who has opposing prep coaches dreaming up the in triple teaming and recruiting college scouts drooling from the sidelines. Taylor, who is averaging over 30 points a game in preseason. takes his assignments in the classroom just as serious as he does on the basketball court. multi-talente- las-te- st WITH A 3.95 gpa under his belt Taylor says the challenge in the classroom is something he has always got a kick out of. I like the challenge, to see what I can get. he said. From his freshman year right through this final year, the star cage player has emerged in such classes as the honors English program, algebra and various history classes. In his two and a half years not only has created some court,, but has sparkled in a member of the honors at Davis High, Brian Taylor excitement on the basketball the classroom. He has been English program for some time.. BRIAN ISNT quite sure what he will major in in col1 kind of like the challege. lenge of studying law, but I dont know yet," he said. And its no secret that Brian will be going on to college, his basketball talents have taken care of that. There hasnt been a night that the Darts have per formed that a college scout or coach hasn't shown up in the crowd. "I LIKE it when the college coaches are there. really like it. I guess if cant perform in front of them now then I wont be able to do it later on." he said. "It really motivates me when the head coaches come like the other night w hen Jerry Pimm (U. of U.) showed up at the Clearfield game. Brian is one who doesn't let things bother him while on the court. "1 try not to let anything bother me." he said. 1 1 AS FAR AS making a choice on a college now. Brian says hell continue to take the advice of his coach. Mike Gardner and just not worry ab- out it until the season is over. Even his parents. Lowell and Marie Taylor, are letting Brian alone in his decision making process. Davis basketball needs points and plenty of assists from Taylor in order to stake a claim on another state tournament spot. But at the same time. Taylor knows it has to be a team effort in order for the tourney berth to come. "LIKE COACH Gardner has said, we are getting better every game. We are not as good as we ought to be but when everyone feels comfortable in working together, well win otr games. "I didn't play with these guys last year and that may have something to do with it. It will take some time for us to get comfortable with each other." admitted Taylor. perience really has a lot to do with greatness." said the high scoring and fancy passing Dart guard. Perhaps basketball comes natural to Brian. He was caught trying to dribble a basketball at 16 months old and then as a first grader was playing in the third grade league. WHEN BRIAN was a freshman he played with the other seniors that make up this year's team. Though they lost their first four, they came back to win 12 straight. As sophomores they finished with the best record in the league and as a junior, Brian moved into the varsity position. IVE ALWAYS practiced hard and played with the older guys. When my older brother Dart (Todd, a former football player) was a senior, I used to play with them as a freshman. All the time while I was younger I was doing crazy things with a basketball, trying to spin it on my finger and everything else." he said. Taylor, whose family has lived in Kaysville all of his life, claims the summer basketball camps had much to do with building his confidence. BUT AS we strive to find our groove. I still maintain we've got to stay loose and have some fun in practice and our games. If it isnt fun we won't find our groove. "Then again we need to have some discipline because we aren't an overpowering team," he said. W HEN BRIAN tossed in 36 points last March in the opentournament game ing against Judge, everyone from the major dailies to Brian's school , paper glued themselves to him. "It was a shocker. When 1 began the tournament I wasnt expecting anything extraordinary to happen. 1 just went out and tryed to be as loose as possible," said Taylor. AT LAST summer's Cougar basketball camp at BYU, for- mer assistant coach Harry Anderson took some time to introduce Brian personally to Danny Ainge. last years college basketball player of the year. It wasn't long before Brian and Danny were going at in a one on one game. It was the kind where one point was given each basket and the winner had to win by two baskets. Ainge finally pulled it out But as each game progressed and Brian continued to find scorhimself on top of the ing race, his popularity continued to mount. All of that wasn't expected, especially to Brian, considering he hadn't played too well before the tournament began. 30-2- 8. THAT REALLY helped said Brian. my confidence, "Dannyisagreat player. Layton, who has never been noted for having a lot of height, will not have a height advantage unless they play the Munchkin National team, but they are endowed with some good outside shooters. Coach Doug Moon, now in his llth year at Layton, feels quickness and consistent outside shooting and all around hustling w ill help the young team pst their share of the wins. WITH TEAMS like Roy and Bonneville in Region One, the Lancers will have to come ready to play for every game. They've shown this determination from iheit first outing. VL FREE ESTIMATES A Christinas V Plan ahead now so you wont forget anyone or anything! Their first two losses were by a total of four points. It seems the better the team the Lancers face the better they perform. Theyve already surprised many people who thought they would be blown off the court the first time they stepped onto the court up against the other team averaging ten feet tall. THERE WILL be a considerable number of juniors in the lineup. The starting positions will be filled by seniors, Mike Moss and Mike Bunting, and also juniors Keith Williams, Brett Campbell and Brad Merrill. All Layton seems to need is a little experience knowing how to work together. As soon as they've played five or six games the Lancers will be playing like a newly tuned en- gine everything humming along smoothly.
