Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS NEWS JOURNAL, . NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JANUARY 21, 1982 w Prep Basketball ITS V play. They barely lost to Sky View the week before, in fact dropped that game in double overtime. With three juniors in the starting lineup, Moon has done well so far in blending a team that has been highly competitive and fun to watch. By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON It wouldnt matter if Clearfield or had won a ballgame before meeting in a never Layton particular year, their contests will always include that intense feeling that has made each one of their meetings as exciting as any prep contest in the state. KEEP IN mind that the Falcons have had a tough time bringing down the Lancers, not only in boys basketball, but just about everything. It wasnt until last season that Clearfield cut off a string of Layton victories in basketball. Even then Coach Craig Hansens region championship team had to battle Layton right to the end to come out on top of their final meeting of the 1980-8- 1 season. Clearfield had to contend last week with the towering height of Bonneville, something they will be happy to take a vaction from against Layton. The Lancers dont have the height that Bonneville has. THE FALCONS are coming off a disaster ballgame in which they lost to Bonneville 69-4They would like nothing more than to improve their record to 1 and keep close to powerful teams like Roy and Bonneville. A loss would hurt this team which would then have to host Sky View and face a tough Roy team the following week. Even after losing by as much as they did, you would have a hard time convincing any Clearfield player that Bonneville is going to beat them the second time around. They still have region championship visions dancing in their minds. But a loss in Layton Friday could cloud those visions and make it a little harder to come back. 3. 2-- THAT WILL certainly be a plus for us, said Hansen of Clearfield. Bonneville simply used their big people to overpower us. Layton doesnt have the big people like we had to face last week but then again we do respect them. 4. Leading Scorers Sign-Up- s In The American Youth Soccer Organization BOUNTIFUL IS one of the best around, Bell, Weight, Izatt, Brown and Seljaas are as good a starting five as there is around. As for my pick. Just a minute. It was heads, Bountiful wins. WOODS CROSS AT EAST. The Leopards are fast gaining a reputation of playing everyone tough! but losing in the end. They have some fine talent especially with Shannon White but they dont have the height to battle most teams. EAST TRIES to press the entire game but the Cat guards proved they could handle pressing in the Highland game. If the Cats can hit theirfoul shots itll be a blowout, if not theyll sneak by. them. Davis at Highland. Coach Mike Gardner summed it up last week, what a week that will be. First we play Bountiful on Tuesday and then Highland on Friday. Just another week at the office I guess. THE DARTS match up with the Rams better than most people think. Highland doesnt have the height of Viewmont, Woods Cross or even Bountiful. This will be one game the Darts will be able to match up heighth wise with. The Brian Taylor show will probably be the difference in this battle. Highland lives and dies by the long range shooting, they won with it against Woods Cross and lost with it to Bountiful. CALL IT madness but I like Davis in this one if they can handle the press and they have the talent to do it. Clearfield at Layton. Talk about rivalries, this one is another great one. Clearfield had a great season last year while the Lancers were down yet Layton won this matchup. AGAIN IT looks like Clearfield should be favored but this reporter is no dummy and will go with the home town folks at Layton. Keith Williams is playing well but thq Layton club is far from a one man show. Brad Merril is playing well as is Campbell Moss and Bunting. CLEARFIELD IS still smarting from that bitter loss to Bonneville last week and they'll have fire in their eyes. Moosman, Riggs and Schofield will like nothing more than to knock off the Lancers who are on top of the world with a 0 league record. Even in writing it seems to me Clearfield should be favored but Layton always seems to pull it out. 2-- J o 'll t A' M ' 4 ,i ii . ii V v i f" : -- ' ' ' t - & :" 'TO X Lane Riggs (44) puts defensive move on a Laker but overall it didnt help as the Bonneville team won. fflr.Stootn) CERTIFIED CARPET & FURNITURE CLEANERS MR. Currently Dave is sailing along with an 2 record on his predictions. Heres his look at this week. Viewmont got off to a slow start but since they switched their lineup a little by moving Kevin Smith to guard and Lynn Andersen into the starting unit they have been getting better with each game. He pumped in 18 points last week against Weber to continue to lead the Lancers in scoring. The junior from California will certainly be a key in this weeks battle against Clearfield. AYSO Conducts Greg Boren pumps shot over Bonneville players Lakers rout. 3 ni id The high point getter for Clearfield was their senior center, Kyle Moosmann, who ended with ten points. Second in line was Lane Riggs with nine. THE LAYTON story starts with their terrible The Lancers trouncing of Weber last Friday, 62-3arent anyones doormat this year and in fact, are eager to prove themselves good enough to make it into the state tournament after a couple of seasons of missing it. The dribbling of Weber certainly indicates just the kind of basketball Coach Doug Moons kids can Layton ii THE LAYTON kids realize that a victory on Friday over Clearfield would give them a greater advantage of inching their way toward that coveted state tournament berth. batAnyway you look at it, this Clearfield-Layto- n tle will have just as much weight riding with it as any in the past. It should prove to be a dandy. BOTH THE Lancers and the Falcons will renew their bitter arch rival relationship again this Friday night in Layton. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. Though there has only been a couple of region games played so far, this game certainly carries a lot of meaning for both clubs. In a brief sentence, the summary is that both clubs need the victory in order to keep alive in the very competitive confines of Region One. .0X04, i'i. USED 17IUDSHIELDS SAVES! The Wildcats are at an advantage with the taller players. THE BOUNTIFUL Braves are steadily picking up and come Friday they should have little trouble in putting Viewmont away. Its my pick that the Royals of Roy will completely dominate their game with Weber. Everyone else has, so this one shouldnt be any different. . LOOK OUT Sky View, cause here comes Bonneville. The Lakers are out for another one which they will get very easily. Its tough for me to pick in the Highland-Davi- s game, but Im going with the Rams. I have faith that the Davis players will get mad with my choice and' dispose of the Rams anyhow. A-- 4-- 1.
