Show I WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JANUARY 28, 1982 . mergence Of Lane Riggs, Only Helps To Aid Falcon laslcetball Fortunes By KEITH DUNCAN CLEARFIELD It may sound a bit out of tune but there are certain ten year olds in town that wont miss a Falcon basketball game. Its not fun at all to miss the play of a guy like Lane Riggs. WHETHER THE 64 Riggs realizes it or not, there are a few who idolize his every move. It doesnt surprise me, said Riggs. When I was a young kid I used to come to Clearfield High games and worship guys like Max Livingston and Mark Reid, and I still do." THE EMERGENCE of Riggs in the Falcon basketball regime has been a big payoff for many, .including myself. From the 13th player on the sophomore basketball team to a starting guard in his senior year, isnt bad progress at all. Now all Riggs wants is the right formula to help Clearfield defend it's region title then get into the state playoffs and help the team do better in postseason play than theyve ever done before. WE ALL want to defend the title, said Riggs, But one of our biggest goals is to get into the tourney and perform well. In past years at Clearfield, playoff teams havent done that well. But before Clearfield can start planning their strategy for a better stat$ tournament showing, they must first get Sometimes we just arent mentally prepared. Physically we couldnt be more ready, said Riggs. Riggs said he and his teammates went out against Weber and played extremely well because of the confidence factor. A week later against Bonneville, however, the team was there but wasnt there. They (Bonneville) have such a team and they dont miss too many shots either. When you play a team like that you cant lose your composure, or youll get blown out like we did. FOR RIGGS, he realizes all the hours of sweat and hard work, the attending of all those baskeball camps and the thousands of dollars poured into basketball, all boils down to this his final year at Clearfield. Its right now, he said. He has achieved his goal of becoming a starter with the varsity, now all he wants is to win at it. DURING THE Lane either led the team in scoring or was tied for the top scoring honors. Then in the first league game against Weber, Riggs pumped in 19 points which ranked him second in the league in scoring. All that activity is a far cry of what he was doing just two years prior. I think I may have been the 13th or 14th player on the team. People kept telling me I had so much capability if 1 were to work hard and put the time in. pre-seas- there. WHEN Brett Peterson (a teammate) and I started going to the Roy Complex everyday. Then, through the summer, we spent almost eight hours a day playing on the court at my house, said Riggs. Finally Riggs and Peterson made the JV squad last year. and mother, and of course. Coach Hansen. Hansen has a fantastic program at Clearfield. From the day basketball season is over, he has a program to keep the juniors and sophomores involved. That includes not only After completing that tour, Riggs made up his mind he on the court playing, but wanted to go through his senior year and have a season weight training and everything else, said Riggs. He said if he had of played anywhere else, he wouldnt have been as motivated to play high school basketball. like Troy Ny and others had had. HE ENROLLED at basketball camps to start with, including the College of Eastern Utah camp and the Dick Motta Camp at Ogden. Both camps featured a story for Riggs. In Price, Riggs won the slam dunk contest which Coach Craig Hansen called unique in that he beat out forwards and centers for the title. I dont know if he is the tallest guard to play at Clearfield, but I do know weve never had a guard here that can slam dunk the ball like Riggs can, he said. EARL RIGGS, who once played basketball at Panguitch High (southern Utah), has often come up to his son Lane and asked if there is anything he could do to promote his sons growth in the sport. He I ALWAYS thought that Lane had the potential to be a fine basketball player and the fact he has grown so much in recent years has also helped him, said Hansen. Riggs was only56 in junior high and has always played the guard spot. At the Dick Motta Camp Lane played against players like Bountifuls Dan Bell and I didnt play Gary Selijlas. that bad against guys like Bell, who a lot consider to be one of the better players in the state. I even played center against them. The fact that I did so well against them, really boosted my confidence, said. he . TWO OF the motivating forces in Lanes athletic lifestyle have been his own father ' Jimmy Phillips (left) and Brian Wright (right) sprint away in Clearfield Track Club afternoon woikout. Ihe Falcons will be heavily involved in the indoor track circuit this winter including meets just about even weekend till the first week in March. Phillips and Wright will be two of Clearfield's top sprinters, both indoors and outdoors. Coach John Flint, now in his eight season of coaching Clearfield track and field, says indoor track is getting more popular every year. netor T rack Off And I WOULD have to report honestly that between Riggs and Peterson, these two have probably averaged at least five hours a day of practicing bas- ketball since last season ended. And depending on what we do in future games and of course what Lane does, he might have a chance to be a good junior college prospect. Youve got to remember that 64" THATS AFTER A frustrating defeat to Layton last week, the Falin league play. cons fell to and mom often came out and played one on one with me. Dad even gives me $5 for every slam dunk I get jn a game, said Riggs with a broad smile. Lane has an outstanding shot and has to be one of the better shooters in the league. And he doesnt have to worry about that shot being blocked said because of his height, Hansen guards are always wanted, especially when they can rebound, shoot and perform like Riggs is capable of doing, concluded Hansen. at USU last Saturday at By KEITH DUNCAN Believe CLEARFIELD it or not, after basketball, wrestling and swimming are through drafting the elite athletes at most schools, there are still enough left over to enhance the growing popularity of indoor track. AFTER A preliminary meet V, R. Zamora, M. Logan, the 1982 indoor circuit is off and running. Of course to maintain eligibility schools must enter the seven or eight 1982 events as track clubs rather than schools. One of the state's biggest supporters of the indoor circuit is Clearfields own John Flint. Now in his eighth season with the Falcons. Flint enjoyed his finest year ever at Clearfield last spring as the Clearfieldites finished second to Hillcrest in the race for the state title. Four of Flints teams have been region champions. WE SUPPORT indoor track here at Clearfield, it's a good idea, said the track mentor. "Track requires a lot of conditioning and indoor track may be a way of giving some of the athletes something to shoot for during their training. INDOOR track also gives the runners a chance to work on some of the shorter races like the 50 yard dash for example," stated Flint. The veteran Clearfield coach also liked the fact that the numbers are fewer in in- door track which gives coaches a chance to work with their better people." THE NUMBERS are fewer which gives me a chance to help some of the kids one on one with techniques and other things, said Flint. A few of the meets that Clearfield plans on entering are the Alta Invitational which is scheduled this Saturday at Alta High School. IN FEBRUARY the Falcons will enroll in the state indoor championships at BYU, another meet at Alta High, the Simplot Games in Pocatello. Idaho (the nation's second largest indoor meet), and the Utah State Invitational on Feb. 27. Clearfield will travel one more time to USU in the beginning of March before taking a break and getting ready for the outdoor season. The popularity of indoor track has increased according to Flint because it gives some of the kids that want to make track, a chance to get ahead. it in CLEARFIELD will not have the depth or the strength they enjoyed in last year's field events. Coach Flint also expects the middle distance running events to be down also. But outside the field events and the middle distances. Clearfield w ill once again be a contender. In fact the Falcons could be stronger this season in the sprints and the hurdles. THE LONG distance races are a plus for Clearfield be- cause nealy everyone who placed last spring are back again. "It's tough replacing a guy like Mark Carter in the field events." said Flint. ' But because of the tradition that's been implanted here, ve may have a few kids cut ii jp and come through for us. "I DONT really like to call this a rebuilding year but would rather describe it as a reloading year." said Flint. INDIVIDUALLY we got some great performances from some of our kids which was great to see. Then Brighton was at the meet and everyone talks about how powerful they are this year. They won the tournament and are a great team, but what I liked was the fact we wrestled them head to head on eight occasions and we won six of them. the coach said. LAYTON, WHICH placed fourth as a team, also had a couple of their wrestlers claim individual honors. Senior Robbie Zamora took the title at 12 and then senior Mike Cabrey won the tile at 138 lbs. Donnie Zamora did a super job in placing second in the 98 lbs. division.
