Show V J I I - By KEITH DUNCAN Darts and the score read 2 after one period. Its no secret that Brian Taylor is the bread and butter of the Davis High offensive attack and last Tuesday, he only added to that claim. His 15 first quarter points are what kept the Darts close to Viewmont in that opening round of play. first end of the one and one but missed the second. Fortunately for the Darts the rebound bounded right into the hands of Kirk Storey and the victory was awarded the Darts. Gardner let out a cry of relief as he hugged his assistant, John Robison. What a win, what a win, he said as he walked off the court. VIEWMONT ON the other hand, was led by big John White who poured in 9 first quarter points and 28 for the game. g The clash was hardly what youd call dull. The lead changed numerous times and the score was tied 12 times. The score was knotted at 56 all with a minute left which was just in time for Taylor to drive the middle and throw in an ally-op- p shot and getting fouled in the pro- THE DARTS were highly effective in mastering the use of Taylor in the closing minutes of play. Gardner wrapped up the Darts philosphy the best by saying, Theyre bigger, much bigger, but a little slower than we were. Because of that we are forced into making them extend their defense and then try to find a situation in which to send Taylor to the foul line. 25-2- BOUNTIFUL Plenty of specialities took place last Tuesday night in the View-mont gymnasium, like the fact that Kris Cottrell ended uo leading his team in defensive rebounds, the fact the Vikings could hardly miss during the first period of action and splendid scoring array of View-monJohn White and Davis Brian Taylor. 8 ts THE LIST goes on a little further but naturally the game boils down to one thing and that is the fact Davis scored its second straight victory over Viewmont this season, a win that helps solidify their chances of landing a berth in the coveted basketball 4-- tournament. 8 The thrilling Dart victory boosts their record to 2 in league play and thus leads them into Fridays encounter with the Woods Cross Wildcats, a team that clipped Davis in the first round. This time though, the contest will be played in the Darts home gym 60-5- 4-- where visiting teams have found it very difficult to grind out victories. THE WAY the game started out last Tuesday, you would have thought the score would look something like a high scoring NBA game when it was over. Viewmont shot in that initial period while making 11 of 13 shots from the field. But despite that torrid shooting pace, they couldnt pull away from the Dart-Vikin- cess. After the three-poi- play, Davis held the lead for good. AFTER A Viewmont field goal that made it a one point Coach Mike ballgame, Gardner of Davis was literally on his hands and knees on the sidelines as he coached the Darts through the final minute of play. With 18 seconds left and with Viewmont in possession, the ball was dished off to White who took an off balanced shot and missed. The rebound went to Troy Anderson who was fouled while bringing it down. Gardner said Taylor has complete freedom in a situation like that, saying he could run, pass, shoot or anything else. The point is that we are clearing it out and making them come and play us, said Gardner. 59-5- GARDNER ADMITS he wouldn't use that kind of a game plan with everyone, but when teams are big and slow, its the only way to go when you are the smaller team. The Tuesday victory was a complete opposite of the slow down type game that Davis won in Kaysville, 7 earlier in the season. In that game Taylor got into early foul trouble which forced the Darts to let the air out of the ball. But last Tuesday Taylor shed himself of our trouble and completed the evening with 35 points. 39-3- DESPITE THE fact Viewmont was so hot in the opening quarter, Davis didnt change their game plan except to do away with the full court press which the Vikings overcame with some good passing and their ability to hit the open man. We had to stay with our game plan, said Gardner, If they had of hit their outside sho; we would have lost the game. BUT WED figure wed take the chance of working inside to keep the ball away from White, we to, he said. It was the first road victory in league play for Davis this season and without question it gives them an edge going into the final weeks of play. Its important that we win on the road because anything can he continued. happen now, THE SECOND quarter last Tuesday was a much slower pace than the first. A quick basket by Kirk Storey and three points from Cottrell gave Davis the lead early in the period. But seven second quarter points by White was enough to let the Vikings lead at halftime, Taylor was in great form again as passes he made were so spectacular that even his own teammates fumbled the ball when a pass was layed at them. Many of Taylors 35 points came from 30 foot jumpers which he was canning with accuracy in the opening period. 36-3- 4. I WAS proud of the kids because they rose to the chalthe lenge, particularly down stretch, said Robison. is all Davis has. Robison said the victory over Viewmont was good for two reasons. The first is the fact Viewmont was so much Robison said the defense taller than Davis and the was changed down the wire to a mainly to from a keep the ball away from White. second is the fact that Viewmont is a team they will have to battle for a tourney berth. 6-- FRIDAYS ACTION Region Four Woods Cross at Davis 7:30 IU Clearfield at Roy 7:30 Bonneville at Layton 7:30 "31 Lancers Plan After traveling to Roy last Friday LAYTON and being humbled by the tall and talented Royals, Coach Doug Moon must pick up the pieces and attempt to get back on the game plan because this Friday his Lancers must face another Region One power, the Bonneville Lakers. THE 68-5- 3 LOSS to Roy dropped Laytons overall record to 6 and evened their region mark at Coach Moon knows all too well that his Lancers are capable of jplaying better basketball than what took place in Roy. With a 10-- 6 lead mid-wa- y through the first quarter, the Lancer shooting began feeling like cold water. As the shots cpntinued to fall off their mark, Roy couldnt miss and shot out to a 3 1 halftime lead. The Royals coasted in from there for their 12th win of the season. 2-- 2. 7-- CJlUL KEITH WILLIAMS pumped quite a few shots from the field and finally ended with eight field goals, seven for seven from the foul line and a game high total of 23 points. The only other double figure scorer was Brad Merrill who notched 12 points. Both Williams and Merrill are juniors which should be kept in mind for next year. The only good thing about playing Bonneville this week is that the game will be in Layton. The Lancers have had pretty good success at home this season but looking at things realistically, Bonneville has had pretty good success anywhere they have played. pre-seaso- n. - In the fourth week of Region One basketLayton ball, Bonneville kept their perfect record in tact by Clearfield nipped Sky View on quieting Weber a last second shot 8 vicand Roy scored a 68-5- 3 over the Lancers. tory Layton 63-5- 3, 70-6- The following are the leading scorers for Region One: HOI HOI Lira, rare, HOI rara, TEt HOI HOI HOt not Lira, hoi HOt THE GAME plan to bring down the Lakers will have to be a good one. So far the Lakers have lost only one game and that came from Viewmont, a team the Lakers beat in But since the loss to the Vikings, the Lakers have continued to improve and have been called by prep basketball fans, as one of the finest teams in the state. The Lakers are coached by Gary Alverson, who came to Bonneville from Weber High, where he once assisted Dick Connolly and the Weber High program. Since moving to Bonneville, Alverson has steadily built a strong and respected program that year in and year out battled for the region crown.
