The USAA or United States Amature Association is the organization that sets the rules for our nations competitive amateur swim programs. MEMBERS OF the Roy Swim Team come from most of the communities in North Davis County, from Weber County and from Ogden City. They are coached by John Whipple of Layton. His assistant is Betty Symonds of Kays-ville. BELONGING to a swim team requires dedication and discipline. The swimmers work out two hours each weekday. During the summer months they swim from 9 a.m. When school is in session the team practices on week nights from 3:30-- 5 p.m. The club has no swimming facility of their own so they have to rent the Roy Complex pool. This is somewhat expensive. The team is limited in the amount of time they can use the pool. Practice schedules are worked around the public use of the pool time. 7-- COACH Whipple says his team is the best quality club in the state even though they are fewer in number than most teams and they dont spend as much time working out as other swim teams. Members of the USAA swim program compete in individual events and relay team events. All swimmers must know the butterfly, back, e breast strokes. At least one coach is always there to supervise and Jim Dickson happens to have the kids this week. It still low key, especially this early. The weightlifting program is for everyone but not everyone comes. Weve got kids who play baseball; some in school leadership and still others who have other interests to them. As we get closer to the season the kids realize the importance of being here but for now its their time," said Dickson. Mug. 13-1- 4 |
