Show blunder of railway employed sends scores of immigrants to death passenger train loaded W th refu gees from on stricken russ a is wrecked and gers caught L ke rats in a trap chicago more than one halt the passengers on an immigrant train on the baltimore and ohio railroad were killed or injured in a collision mon day between the passenger train and a freight near woodville ind one hundred and sixty five gers were on the train and of these forty seven were either killed out right or were burned to death in the fire which broke out in the wreckage immediately after the collision the names of all of the dead will probably never be known as forty five of the bodies were consumed in the flames or were so badly burned that didenti fl cation Is impossible thirty eight people were injured and several of these will die eighty others escaped unhurt but lost near ly all their baggage and clothing the disaster was caused by a blun der of some employed of the railroad company but just where the blame lies has not as yet been determined the passenger train which was load ed with russ an jews serviano ians and poles all of them recent arrivals in this country and bound for chicago or places in the northwest was the second section of a through train from baltimore which collided with a freight train which had left the side track after the first section passed and started down the main line at full speed the two trains came together with speed and in the crash six passenger coaches and several freight cars were knocked into kindling wood and to gether with the locomotives went roll ing down the ten foot embankment |
