THIS MACHINE happens lo be situated in Layton where Doug Moons Lancers rolled over Vicwmonl last Friday night. This week Moon and his crew w ill do a little more lune-u- p work when they were to face East at home on Tuesday night and travel to Cottonwood on Friday evening, two teams that Layton beat last year. THE VIKINGS were simply no match for Laytons experience and talent. In fact the margin could have been much worse had the Lancers found high gear like they're capable of doing. The Layton defense held Viewmont to a mere 14 field goals the entire game and except for some lackluster sprees in defensive rebounding, Moon was very, very pleased wiih his kid's performance on defense. 67-4- nt DEFENSIVELY I thought our kids got after it. We've still got a few areas to improve in, but overall we played some pretty stiff defense. said Moon. Offensively we were perhaps impatient at times. Sometimes when you get the kind of lead we had, you tend to get impatient and create something yourself rather than letting the offense create it for ya, continued Moon. Campbell doesnt think so, not yet DUNCAN anyway. IT MAY sound funny, but we dont let a LAYTON - Experience mixed with a bunch bunch of pressure get to us, said Campbell, of desire can be mighty deadly in sports. Come I just want to have a good season and want and watch Brett Campbell and Layton Lancers the team to do the same. and youll see why. Coach Moon commented about the undue pressure subject by saying, In order for this CAMPBELL, the tallest player on the Laseason to be the kind of success we are hoping returns for it can be, each ncers 982-8- 3 basketball team at player including Campbell has his final year in a Lancer uniform. His biggest asset to us will be his rebounding strength. If we can get the 10 to 12 rebounds a game he obtained consistently as a junior, thats all we can expect. Hopefully four or five of those boards are offensive ones that result in a few points. Combine that with the other 6 to 8 points hell get on offense and hell be sitting at the 12 to 14 points per game average that we want him to get. MOON SAID further, Since we dont have a big man, its a good feeling to know that Campbell has improved his inside twice as much over last year. And even better than that, Brett realizes that hes got an entire season to get even better. Campbell himself reported after Laytons trouncing of Viewmont last Friday night, Were all working hard. Weve come a long ways but the thing that keeps us fresh is knowing that we have so much more room for improvement. AS FOOTBALLS were flying through the fall, Campbell could be found in the gym, usually with his younger brother Jaren (a junior on the squad), working hours to improve his hook shot. There were a certain number of things I could work on without the entire team here and I spent all my time on them, said Campbell. BRETT ALSO had a bigger brother, Shawn, who once played Layton basketball and now as is the starting center for Utah a seven-footer Technical College. Playing against Shawn has given me a real lesson on playing guys bigger than me. I think I can hold my own, said Campbell. After a couple weeks of practice, Campbell was as ready as anyone to get the season started. Having not played football like Merrill, Jeff Moon and others, getting back into the competitive swing of things was the only answer. I THINK everyone on the team believes we can take the region title and do well in state. We are all thinking really serious about it, said Campbell. Brett Campbell returns as the Lancer kingpin to complete what he began as junior. a kESt |
