Introduce your child into the exciting world of computer technology placenta wall into the baby rather easily in the some concentration as it is in the mothers blood stream. She added that research in this area is in preliminary stages, but has been positively connected with agitation, sleeplessness and stomach acidity in the mother. EVELYN A. Day, assistant professor of child and family studies at Weber State College and an instructor in nutrition, said that a womans body tucks away excess vitamins and minerals to be used in pregnancy, but even with these natural supplies pregnant women must maintain excellent diets. Mrs. Day said, Calorie needs increase only seven percent over what they were before pregnancy, but some nutrients must be increased as much as 75 percent. Consequently there is no room in the diet for empty calorie foods. THE EFFECTS of soft drinks, on the other hand, are more of a proven threat. She said, Soft drinks are high in phosphorus and an excess can upset the water balance and lead to edema. In some cases it can eventually lead to heart failure. HIGH PROTEIN, low carbohydrate diets and salt free diets or dieuretics are also extremely dangerous as well as any diet that restricts caloric intake to 1000 or less, she said. All the babys major organs are formed by the fourth month of pregnancy and if the nutrients they need are not there complications may result, said Mrs. Day. SHE SAID that after birth it takes a womans body one to two years to replenish her natural stores of nutrition. Shortly before the birth of her child the female body begins building reserves needed for lactation and for post delivery recovery. She said, In breast feeding a woman needs 1000 extra calories per day to produce enough calories to feed an infant. Half of that comes from what the woman eats and half comes from the bodys stores. MRS. DAY said that while most pregnant women are careful with their diets a rise in teenage pregnancies has created additional problems for the young mothers. She said, Pregnant teenagers have approximately a 25 percent higher nutritional need than the normal woman because they are still growing. But thats not exactly the way teenage, girls eat and there is concern in nutrition circies that theyre not getting the vitamins and minerals they need. SHE NOTED that across the country as well as here in Utah clinics are being established that monitor the diets of the teenage mothers. SNACK FOODS, rich desserts and fatty foods are some that provide too little nutrition and high amounts of calories, she sad. According to Mrs. Day a good diet should consist of a variety from the four food groups and include three to four cups of milk a day, two double servings of meat and one to two eggs, servings of dark green or orange vegetables, servings of foods providing vitamin C and five servings of bread per day. MRS. DAY NOTED that even at that an average woman should gain only 24 to 28 pounds during pregnancy with most of that coming during the final three months. Thus there is a need to avoid empty calorie foods. Women should never lose weight during a pregnanif they are overweight, she said. even cy SHE NOTED that besides drugs and alcohol excesses of caffeine and soft drinks can also prove harmful. According to the Weber State nutritionist some studies, while, still controversial, seem to indicate a connection between excesses of caffeine and birth defects and miscarriages. Five cups of coffee a day, for example, would be excessive, according to Mrs. Day. MRS. DAY said, Certainly caffeine gets through the GOSUB ONE 'Your Friendly Computer Training Center" Learn to Compute the GOSUB ONE Way Certified teacher 4 5 hours per day days Computers Supplied (Apple He) 10 students per class 2 students per computer Curriculum Computer Concepts Emphasis on Basic Programing Designed for intermediate grades up We will IF YOU MUST mow close, do it in the spring just Then prior to spring greenup, preferably by mid-Apr- il. be careful not to scalp the lawn, cutting it to the bare soil. Leave at least an inch of brown lawn showing. Its important to leave the grass plant crown uninjured and vigorous. Generally, during the growing season we recommend mowing home lawns to a height of 2 to 1'h inches above the soil level. Some grasses may tolerate higher mowing cuts. Avoid cutting so high that the grass flops over on its side and matts the soil surface. Cutting the grass high reduces water loss from the soil. It keeps lawn soil surfaces cooler and reduces compaction on soil and heavy traffic. DONT BE afraid of leaving grass clippings on the soil surface after mowing. They dont contribute to thatch buildup unless the clippings are unusually long. These carbohydrates are essential to support daily functions of the roots, crowns and rhizomes of the plant. YOU REMOVE the problem of root shock and and loss of stored carbohydrates by close mowing after the grass has turned brown in the fall. However, you lose the benefit of lawns left high. The shade is more important during the winter when snow cover is limited. Drying winter winds and low relative humidity result in a high rate of water loss from unprotected, closely mowed lawns. Each couple was then filmed for 30 seconds. Trained undergraduate students looked at the film for nonverbal behaviors such as eye contact, body position, touching, amount of time spent talking and distance partners sat from each other. A second group of students rated the couples commitment to the relationship based on questionnaire responses. TOUCH WAS the strongest indicator of commitment, the researchers found. The distance couples sat from each other was another good indicator. We were able to predict an individuals commitment to the recommunication, says lationship through Kramer. Those who reported being mors committed and spending more time together were more physically affectionate. From questionnaire analysis, Kramer found that the amount of time spent together was a much better predictor of commitment than the length of the relationship. If, for instance, youve been dating someone for year, but you see them once a week, youre not getting anywhere. WHILE A follow-u- p survey of the couples had too low a return rate to make accurate predictions, it offered some confirmation of Kramers commitment . measures. If in the initial questionnaire a couple said they were committed or they were spending more free time together, they were more likely to be together a year later. 15-2- Instructor also be offering: Silence Is Truly Golden The less a woman talks to her partner, the more committed the couple is, according to a study by two University of Utah researchers. ROBERT Kramer and Ross Nakashima, graduate students in the Psychology Department, looked at nonverbal communication among 60 couples ages 6 for an indication of their commitment to each other. Touching was the strongest indicator of commitment for both sexes, but the second strongest indicator for men was body position, while for women it was the amount of time spent talking to the date. IT APPEARS that the more committed a relationship, the more relaxed a woman feels and the more comfortable she is with silence, says Kramer, noting behavior reflects more comthat in general fort and less inhibitions between highly committed couples. His study also found that men were more likely to lean toward a partner they considered attractive, while women were more likely to touch a partner they found attractive. An individuals rating of a partners attractiveness moderately correlated to commitment of the he says. But we cant tell if theyre relationship, more committed because theyre attracted or if because theyre more committed theyre more likely to find the partner attractive.
