Simmons of Kaysville to search them out. -- ROY IS an energetic, yet quiet man with much concern and love for everyone. His heart is as big as Santa Claus, always eager to bring joy to others. Mr. Simmons is president of Zions National Bank in Salt Lake City and three years ago he started a program which has proven a tremendous success. . MR. SIMMONS works through the state school board of education to locate one room school buildings that are still in existence. Then he sponsors a field day at the close of the school year for the children of that school, which consists of a three day holiday for the youngsters. Other employees of the bank assist Mr. Simmons with homes and food for the children and their chaperons for their overnight stay. ... ......... THE FIRST year there were 1 1 students, the second year 29 and this year 14. On May 23, 24 and 25, Mr. and Mrs. Simmons and Mrs. Doris Taggert, also of Kaysville, who is public relations vice president of the bank, hosted the group and their chaperons at their homes for a three day stay. Other bank employees have assisted in the past. Last year Bishop and Mrs. Jerald Dent helped in their home. The school selected this year was Antimony in Antimony, Utah, approximately 90 miles west of Delta, with 14 students ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade. There are only 150 people in the entire community of Antimony. THEY WERE bused into Salt Lake City with the chaperons and treated to three full days of excitement and entertainment with all expenses paid. What more can children ask of a field day of this type, a once in a lifetime experience. Many of the children have never had the opportunity of being in a big city, riding on elevators or escalators, going to Lagoon, etc. ON MONDAY they visited Hogle Zoo and saw the baby animals. Also a trip to the Hansen Planetarium where they loved the show Star Magic" and to climax the day an excursion to Antelope Island with dinner served at the home of Mrs. Taggert that evening. Tuesday was an all day trip to Lagoon resort to ride all the fun rides and swimming, etc. They returned to the Simmons home for a patio dinner. WEDNESDAY they visited the State Capitol building. All the children were sporting red with the Antimony School insignia across the front. THE SEVEN boys, the bus driver and two fathers stayed with the Simmons, the seven girls, the teacher and two mothers stayed with Mrs. Taggert. The children look forward all year to this excursion as do the parents. Everyone in the community wants to accompany the children, even the grandparents, so as not to show partiality, names were drawn to determine who makes the trip. This year the adults accompanying the students were the bus driver of Piute County, Wayne DeLang and his wife, Koami who is the school lunch cook; Marjorie Robinson, school teacher and principal; Charjie Brindley, town mayor; Randy Gould, PTA president and father, Ilene Blood, parent and mother. ROBINSON, teacher, said her pupils are in the 98 percent bracket in the state in education (reading, math, etc.) which speaks highly of our education program even though we are few in number. Mayor Brindley said, they have no serious problems with the children in the schools. MR. GOULD, PTA president stated the school programs function smoothly and every parent is willing to participate. Mr. Simmons is pleased with the success which enlightens the childrens knowledge in the education field by letting them see things first hand as well as an outing to bring happiness to each of them. JIM HILL, Bishop Jared Dent and others who are employed at Zions National Bank have assisted with the program. Mr. Simmons not only sponsors the One Room School Building Field Day, he also sponsors the Christmas Tree Ornament program which he began seven years ago in the school.
