DUNCAN KEITH Journal Sports - KAYSVILLE Not everyone was supof shoulder pads for a living to set a wear posed or star in a swimming suit through the Worlds Olympics. The truth is, some could care less. 00' WHEN YOUNG Johnnie collects five hits in five at bats in a little league contest, perhaps thats not the green light to exploit him as the next Babe Ruth. A little patience and letting time mend its course is probably the best answer. In my opinion the meaning of athletics, both organizational and non, goes much deeper than merely winning and losing or going onto the pros or not. all-st- ar 4 u Mike and Linda Sampson of Kaysville found the true meaning of athletics, enough in fact to help them build a very happy family. BESIDES THE team standings in volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, tennis and track and field, which in part is what is most important to the program, there were some individuals who stood out that were recognized at a seasonending banquet. Conducting the awards session was Coach Ann Avondet, who after coming from Weber State College as one of the Lady Wildcats top athletes, has blended perfectly into the Lady Dart program. AVONDET coaches volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter and track and field during the summer. She played volleyball and basketball at Weber State extensively. One of the most prestigious awards of the evening was presented to Tracie Belt as the LOOK FOR Robert Ferneau to continue to improve this summer. Robert started for Layton High at centerfield last spring and so far has been a good asset to the summer team. Infielder Eric Naulder will be a senior this fall. This is the guy who took over for Craig Kennedy when the latter was beaned by a stray ball during an indoor practice last spring with the Lancers. Naulder should continue to improve and might very well be Layton Highs third baseman next spring. Outstanding Overall Athlete. Belt was a regu- lar in volleyball, basketball and track. IT WAS Mikes father, Herbert Simpson, who proposed one day that Mike and his little brother Pat, go out for the swimming team. The proposal was extremely innocent, since neither of the brothers had ever done anything athletic in an organized manner. It wasnt the most important thing in our lives, remembers Mike, But we got serious about it and before long Pat and I had quite a rivalry going. WED NEVER played little league sports and neither of us continued sports after high school, but through all the competition, we were able to meet new people and become better equipped with meetings lifes trials. It was a great experience. Mike went on to letter three years in a row in swimming and while there set a new record in the schools backstroke and contributed to one in the medley relay. LINDA, a former Ehin, whose little brother Chuck just inked a contract with the San Diego Chargers, also made a stab at swimming competition. Athletics and particularly swimming, was more an outlet for me than anything else, LINDA IS presently looking into a teaching position in Bountiful with the U. of U. exten- sion service. Mike graduated with a degree in recreation and thats helped to propel him into a very busy job as Hill Air Force Bases Varsity Sports director and the assistant intramureals chief. WORKING with the military sports program stands with its challenges, including 60 hour work weeks at times. Mike works with everything from baseball, to volleyball, to tennis, to hockey and a multitude of other events. Presently the AFLC Womens Softball Championships are going on which require 60 hours a week themselves. Military sports, such as I work with, are perhaps a notch above high school sports and not quite where youd picture college sports. Its a different type of job and something I enjoy, said Mike. ATHLETICS has been there when Ive needed it. Im not one to put a lot of stress on sports, but its always been a good outlet. With my brother Chuck playing football, Ive undoubtedly had an interest in football and it will be interesting watching him through the pros, Linda commented. MIKE STATED some more view too. He commented, Athletics filled the gap during high school. I honestly enjoyed my part of it. I look forward to getting really involved again when my kids get to a point that they can participate. SPORTS HAS been something special, but it shouldnt be all consuming. There is a mind to perfect too. Linda changed to an English major during the four years at Weber. During a particular symposium, she was one of four selected to speak and one of her latest pieces of work has attracted a professors certain interest, enough to ask Linda to continue to work on it. Participation in athletics came in a very timid way for them. Growth and excellence existed, enough that they set new records in their respective sports. But they later went on to bigger and better things in their own way. Athletics during its heyday played a convincing role, but was a bounding board to more significant things such as a happy, healthy family with two children. The background sketch on the Sampsons found Mike once a Clearfield Falcon who graduated in 1976.
