I had never coached before and havent even played since I was a girl (which was a long time ago). to gracefully decline the offer, my husband was called to be the Bishop of the Kaysville 18th Ward and I felt this certainly eliminated him. I had two girls playing on . this team and I decided that it certainly was my turn to help and so launched my coaching career. The girls were most patient with me and tried to teach me what to do. I bought myself a baseball shirt and dusted off my Keds, but I soon found out there was more to coaching than wearing the team colors. WHEN MR. Hansen from the Kaysville recreation called and asked if my husband and I would like to coach a team it I HAD to learn the rules of seemed like a large expenditure of time that I wasnt sure I softball, and as the girls began wanted to spend. While I was to win game after game I found on this trying to think of a good excuse some great athletes Coach Lois Smuin, back left, lists many reasons why shes immersed herself in coaching such teams as this championship Kaysville girls softball team. Members are; back, Shannon Ashby, Monica Gustin, Nancy Kirkpat- rick, Heidi Glanville, Teri Thompson and JoyLynn Sorensen; front, Nikki Fondario, left, Heather Peel, Elizabeth and Emma Smuin and Teresa Schomberg. One of the biggest chal- lenges was being able to use all the girls in every game because there were so many good players. As the season progressed we won all of our league games plus the Layton Invitational and went on to become the champions of the Layton League. The most valuable player award was won by Kris Kunnen on our team. WE TOOK the league with a record of not a single loss or forfeit. What a massive team. I not only had a great team but I Be-atheb EXTERIOR PAINT Quality durable exterior paints had great support from parents who were there game after game. Fathers like Pete Fondario who was our third base coach and greatest fan. He brought the girls gum, drinks and pizza but most of all great support. My husband even with his new job only missed one game and was our first base coach and equipment hauler. As the season came to a close and I finally got the dust from my Levis, it was with some sadness that I returned the equipment to Mr. Hansen. These were great girls, not only good ball players but good sports as well. I do hope they had as piM WEATHER PLATE EXTERIOR FLAT LATEX A modern, weather resistant, easy to use exterior paint for wood or masonry surfaces. Provides durability and color richness lor your home.
