Group Tours Davis Soil Conservation The annual conservation tour iponwred by the Davit SCD (Soil Convcrvation Dit tnct) and the ASC (Agricultural Stabilisation and Conse- rvation) Committee wat attended by about 6$ people from Davis and Salt Lake counties. THE GROUP met in the bowery of the Centerville Park where Gary Kappcsser, hydrologist with the Forest Service. gave some background on past flooding along the Wasatch Front. Floods in the early 1900s were very serious and this spring was somewhat reminiscent, but a little different cause. Snowpacks this spring were the heaviest on record and mud slides occurred in every major drainage from North Salt Lake to Kaysville. Mud and debris flows caused by su- per water saturated soil condi- tions are more difficult to control than regular flood flows. THE GROUP then toured some of the flood damaged areas by bus and cars. At Mueller Park, soil slippage at the edge of Mill Creek and a few hundred feet up the north facing side hill were viewed. The damage along Holbrook, Stone Creeks, etc. was more serious than many had thought. At Ricks Creek, the group saw an irrigation pipeline where the hillside was undercut by the flood waters and soil slippage broke the line. Al the mouth of Farmington Canyon, the debris basin which had served as a local fishing pond for yean is completely filled with rock, gravel and flood debris. This basin did a tremen-- . dous amount of good trapping the debris so it would not do It will pay off in energy dollars. Have you looked around the house lately? DRIVING through the mud flow depositions of Rudd Creek in Northeast Farming-to- n probably showed the most devastation. Much of the channel of Rudd Creek was cut down 40 feet or more to bedrock. More mud flow is expected in this area and a debris basin is being planned where about 10 homes stood a few months ago. A chicken luncheon was served at Farmington City Park courtesy of W. R. White like dirty furnace filters, or uncauiked windows. Sometimes theyre major, like old worn gas appliances or poor attic Insulation.
