Show FEBRUARY 1, 1984 Do Talcs, Lancers Have Enough To Knock Offices? -- .1 ' By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON - Box Elder High athletics have been outright beeish (another term for bullish) on Region One athletic competition this year. After flexing their muscle in football and tying for the region crown and before the basketball teams recent skid, the Bees . have had one of the most consistent sports shows in the region. NOW THE curtain opens on the Region One Wrestling Tournament which takes place this Thursday at Layton High, beginning at 10 a.m. and running until the championship round that same day at 7:30 p.m. And guess what folks? Of all the sports you could have figured Box Elderto dominate, you got it, wrestling is their What a tangled mess! Davis Shawn Robinson ties up with Highland wrestler during final duel of the year. It was Robinson s final high school dual meet in a glorious prep career. , If Darts Conquer Second Round, Vikes In Trouble 'By Davis 'Dickson Is Hoping Last Tears Sccrn Doesnt Repeat KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE - Bob Steele of Woods Cross says he's : going with Viewmont to win ; the Region Four wrestling: Crown this Thursday at Highland High. Even Jerry Staley up on the hill in Bountiful, likes the Vike's chances. : 1 THAT MEANS, perhaps. that Davis' impressive whip-- : ping of region people in the dual season means little or no-- : thing at all. All the Darts did was to go 0 and never had a : team come within 16 points when the heavyweights were 2 done. t 5-- J Well folks, especially you follow those Darts, the truth is that the classy undcfc-- ; ated record really means no-- ; thing. Anything can happen. and that means anything, w hen region tournament time rolls : who ; : around. : DESPITE having a much ; more experienced team this year than last. Jim Dickson ; predicts the region meet to be j "much closer than last sea-- : son." "I hope like heck I'm w rong. but that's just about the way it stacks up right now. said the Davis coach. 1 ; V And it's no secret as Steele and Staley indicate. View mont will once again be the club that will challenge the Darts for the region gold. BE quite honest with riiv self and everyone in say ing that if we do well in the second round on Thursday, we have a chance of running away with it. What a critical round Torus. We ve got at least four w rest-- . ' fcrs who have first round byes max-: a that could pick us up imum of 48 points and a mini-- : mum of 36 if they wrestle like they're supposed to. That's a (on of piunts. said Dickson. 2 ' i : : : I Il.L I But on the otherhand. Dick-- j son is well aware of the night ftiarrish second round his '83 club had. If it hadn't been for some putty performances after .(hat. Viewmont could have ft cry well have overtaken the f defending Davis champions. J ! THINK most people in side the circles would agree this year's meet is going to be : much closer than last year's : meet. 1 he reason people be : jieve that is because of the : humMr of kids back. Where we've got kids back at some : weights, other schools have got 'em back too. "Some people think its and 1 going to be a runaway don't think so. But I do hope ' like hell that I'm wrong." Dickson continued. f : f a breakdown, weight by weight ilHF, FOLLOWING is heading into the Thursday championship showdown. 98 Pounds , Cary Gunther of Woods Cross has the first seed, having gone undefeated thus far. Davis' Justin Julander gets a first round bye but he'll face the second seed in the second round having not picked up Davis points to that point yet. Julander is a sophomore, coming on strong. nip and tuck over Highland's Vaun Hall who he drew with Duane last Thursday, Hatch is also tough here from Viewmont. It's interesting to note that neither Gerrard, Hall or Hatch have been beaten by each other or anyone in region. 3-- 3. 138 Pounds 138 POUNDS. Davis 105 POUNDS. Derek Green also got a first round bye and most likely will face Highland's Mike Pugh in the second round. Talk about a rematch. These two wrestled to a 4 tie in the dual last Thursday. East's Armad Rasagi might be the favorite to win this weight class even though hes wrestled only two league matches. 4-- 112 Pounds 112 POUNDS. Shawn Robinson wants a challenge here because he wants to be as ready as possible next week at . Weber Slate in the state meet. Another Rasagi brother at East or even Shawn Moore at Viewmont might present the biggest challenges. Robinson is the defending champion at 105 in both this region and state. 119 Pounds 119 POUNDS. It would be a pleasant surprise to Dickson if cither Robert West or Brad Leete could rise up and place high in this weight, but it's not really likely they'll challenge for the crown because of the experienced people back. Highland's Mark Jorgenson. Vicwmont's Adam Howard and Bountifuls Jeff Olsen will be the mainstays in (he fight. Howard from Viewmont is a defending region 167 POUNDS. Just like at 133. the 167 class is questionable from day No. I who will win. On Monday at press time, either Todd Marriott or Jeff Hammer were going to wrestle for Davis. Hammer looked Mike Price has No. 1 seeding rights at 138 after going 1 in region. But hell have his hands full with Darren Hammer of Bountiful. who gave him his only defeat. Mark White of Highland. whom Price beat last Thursday. 1 . will be a test as will Vicwmonts Kyle Foster who is coming down a weight but is 0 at 138. 4-- 105 Pounds 167 Pounds 3-- pretty good at Highland until he got himself in trouble and was pinned. Mike Erickson of Woods Cross is the No. I seed but reports were Monday that he might not be ready because of an injury. 185 Pounds 185 POUNDS. Sit back in Vicwmont's odds on favorite here. This is one of the weights that has a clear-cu- t person who most would bet their money on. However Sowell hadn't better take Highland's Andy Capron very lightly after he beat up on Davis Bruce Hinckley 20-- 5 last Thursday evening. 126 POUNDS. JcIT Sowell is the 132 Pounds POINDS. If any weight were up for grabs, from top to bottom, it'd have to be 126. Davis' Mike Gcrrafd has No. I seeding rights but that's just a 132 HEAVYW EIGHT. If Davis Rody Meacham can get by Easts John Candelaria, whom he has beaten before, then he'll get another chance at Region Four's favorite to win the heavyweight crown. Woods Cross' Joe Gillespie. Casdorph. the gritty junior athlete, isn't the kind to concede anything. He's seeded second and hopes to pull off ...weve got a slim chance to defend our title. ' THE FOLLOWING is a weight by weight breakdown: 98 Pounds 98 POUNDS: Clearfield's Wayne Estep made up his mind at the right time to make his comeback on the wrestling circuit. After going through a tailspin for a short while. Estep is back and seeded numberone - 126 POUNDS. Here comes favorite. another clear-cBox Elders Brad Williams ut should be another Bee region champion. However Clearfields Rick Herdt has come the closest to beating him and hell present a challenge for sure. Laytons Song Pol Nienise-n- i is also respectable and could make some surprises if hes up to it. 132 Pounds 132 POUNDS. Brian Bailey of Layton is a winner in nearly everything he does. Hes 0 against region competition and 5-- rightly deserves the No. seeding. The Layton junior 138 Pounds 138 POUNDS. Still another favorite is Layton's junior, Brent Higgs. Higgs is undefeated and really hasn't had a lot of trouble from his clear-c- 1 the league dual sessions, was Clearfield's Tom Wood. Wood moved up a weight the week Clearfield met Layton. Wood of course, is probably the better wrestler of the two. but in no way could you call him a definite favorite. Box Elder's Kyle Smoot might come along nd replace em all. Could be interesting to' watch and see what happens here. . . 155 Pounds 155 POUNDS. Some coaches have termed this weight class as one of the in the 12 entered. It that way because of the youth and inexperience. weakest might be Box Elders Lorin Widdison is the favorite and Bryce Wilcox of Roy is right behind him. Clearfields rising young sophomore, Mark Martinez, could rise up and surprise everyone. Martinez will meet Laytons sophomore. Dennis Heinze in the first round which could be a critical match in terms of points for both schools. 167 Pounds 167 POUNDS. Clearfield's Mike Sorenson believes he is through with injuries and being sick and now wants to get on with winning the Region One title at 167. Box Elder's Jepp-so- n might give Sorenson his biggest challenge but so could Bonnevilles Marc Nielson. Larry Rynders of Layton is seeded fourth in this class. 185 Pounds 185 POUNDS. Bonnevilles.. Thane Morgan has the edge of 185, but Clearfields Scott Fer-ri- n would like nothing more than to rise up and take the title for his teammates and himself. Layton will not have an entry here. ut region competition here. However, since Higgs and Clearfield's Merrill Johnson met last, Johnson has been on a tear and could present Higgs with more than hell ever expect. Box Elders Robert Lemon should also figure high in the placings here. Heavyweights Bonnevilles Todd Wheelwright appears to be headed for a HEAVYWEIGHT. re-gi- championship at heavyweight. Even though Box Elder's McNeeley is returning and Clearfields Dennis Langford is coming on, none of them will give Wheelwright the match he wants. Layton will go with Rod Arrant in this weight class. - in Region One. 105 POUNDS: One of the favorites in the 84 t event include Box Elders Kelly Norman at 105. He should win easily if he chooses not to stumble someplace. Curtis Beames of Box Elder and Shad Ragan of Clearfield will be the only two to upset Rientjes. Ragan has appeared 145 POUNDS. One of Mike Hansens biggest surprises of the year. has been Chuck Romero. Just about any of these three could win this thing with Layton's Romero being the darkhorse favorite among Davis Jim Dickson the upset. Nate Hinckley is now 18-- on the year and as you would have guessed. would like to keep that record perfect through region tournament action. Earlier. Hinckley had reported that Bountiful's Kirk Sheppard had given him one of his closest matches of the year and they might meet each other again. If things go the way they should, the Bees will probably end up with 160 to 166 points. Clearfield, which upset Box .Elder in a dual match earlier, will finish second with 140 or so points and Layton, the defending Region One champion, will settle in at third. I BELIEVE my team (Layton) and Clearfield will make it more difficult for Box Elder to win our region than what Viewmont and any other team in Region Four will confront Davis with. Weve got a slim chance to defend our title but thats just about it because of the strength Box Elder has this year, said Laytons Mike Hansen. Scott Tennis of Clearfield stated, Ive got only one primary wish going into the region tournament this year. Thats the desire that each of my kids wrestle to their greatest potential. If they do that, then perhaps upsetting Box Elder might take care of Clay Carter of Box Elder probably in the championship on Thursday night. Hyde and Carter, along with Davis Shawn Robinson and Cyprus' Dave Lucero are the four that will make a headstrong battle for the state title. Clearfields Randy Shelley is finally back from an injury and who knows what this gutsy kid will do.
