Show H SECTION Brain Pain The baseball season got underway head first this last week. Eight runs was enough for Bountiful to beat the 0X0 Wednesday h April 4, 1984 Wildcats, while Viewmont suffered a hearing loss after a episode at Davis. , . ' Lmml) By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports CLEARFIELD did it again! - The Lancet THEY NIPPED a solid Clearfield baseball team 4 last Friday afternoon and demonstrated in the process that theyll be out to defend their supremacy over Region One baseball. Clearfield, meanwhile, will regroup and attempt to get into the drivers seat where most folks predicted theyd be. Theyll face Roy on Tuesday and Bonneville at home this Friday. THE LANCERS had a number of heros in their region opener, but perhaps the main spotlight focuses in on a junior, James Kortright. Kortright hadnt thrown more than two consecutive innings of baseball prior to Friday, but pitched six brilliant innings of baseball to help pace the Layton win. BRAD HAWKINS, the Lancer skipper, sparkled with enthusiasm as he stated,' James will have to learn how to move it around a little more, but bottom line 1 couldnt have asked for anything more. Clerafields Ken Hicks was just as impressed, and said, The Layton pitcher looked impressive, he certainly was able to keep the ball down on us. ANOTHER JUNIOR, Brian Bailey, gave us his shortstop position to snuff Clearfield out in the bottom of the seventh. But as mentioned, there were more heros for Layton, guys like Bart Vernon who had an day behind the plate and with the bat. Vernon, still another junior, went 2 for 4 with a double in the big first inning and a solo homer in the middle innings that proved to be the final margin of victory. 5-- r;s 5-- runs in the opening inning, I thought the only bad pitch Jeff threw was the high 0 pitch that Vernon sent out. Besides that. Parry had things under control." Hawkins agreed with Hicks, in saying, "Parry was tough as the game wore on. He showed some great poise by not letting the opening inning ruffle him off the mound." PARRY NOT only got better with his pitches, but also let off some steam with his bat when he wailed into a Kortright pitch in the sixth inning for a solo homer, 3-- j Perhaps one more Lancer worthy of mention was Bailey who played superb at shortstop. In the third inning he snagged a ball out of . the dirt to tag a Clearfield base run- ncr. "Brian is a good shortstop and I hate to pitch him because of it. But I have no other choice. We just dont want to ruin Brians arm because he could be a college player someday," said Hawkins. Bailey also went 2 for 4 with his bat. THE FALCONS never quit, de- -: spite being shelled in the beginning. Some costly mental mistakes after that really hurt their comeback chances. The Clearfield team also proved they could hit the ball. When Kortright delivered it down the middle, Phil Peterson, Parry. Mark Adams, Taylor. Page Higgins and others took advantage. Taylor and Higgins, two sophomores, came up with crucial hits at crucial times late in the game. OUR KIDS realize theyve got some potential." said Hicks, "But 1 dont know of any team that has won with potential. We've got to produce and play and Im positive we will. "We lost a battle last Friday but the war for the region title is still on. We're going to battle some people, including Layton again when we meet them again." HAWKINS stated, "My kids really get ready to play Clearfield, and I'll tell you what, that is a good Clearfield team. We w ere tickled to come away from it with a win. Theres nothing like beating the team everyone picks to w m region. "Were getting better everyday, thats our motto. AT DAVIS High, Bruce Bitner is staring at the effects of what graduation really means to a soccer program that one year ago was the elite in the state of Utah. In simple terms, the defending state champion Darts have got a CC ...first year since Ive coached soccer that weve been in a rebuilding situation. BUT DESPITE what graduation has done and despite the inexperience, you get the feeling after viewing Bitners past performance as a coach, that his Dart soccer players will rally round him and find a way to win. Bitner is entering'his seventh season as the head coach here and through those years he has helped three teams win region titles, two teams take second in state and ultimately helped 'fast years squad win the coveted state u title. ; Bruce will continue to mold together a' winning combination with such players as David Laltin and Rick Youngberg, the two team captains. Also fitting in there Will be Ryan Smith, the gutty halfback from football who never gives in. THIS YEAR Bitner will be working with a number of former football stars that will be trying to covert their skills to that of soccer. Those include Curt Cottrell, Jeff Cont. next page . THE DARTS, who opened their '84 quest for a second straight state title last Friday by losing to View-molost to graduation its complete defense including a superb goalie and a set of superior fullbacks. Also lost was their number one scorer, Brian Bacon, the guy who was chosen MVP for the entire year. "It won't be easy to replace kids like Bacon, Scott Argyle, Chad Morgan and others." said Bruce, nt 5-- "but we must," AND MH1LE Bitner tries to rebuild his program, Mother Nature has done her best to detail hi e (Torts, The cold, wet weather has played havoc in denying the youn- ger, inexperienced players a chance to play in practice games and in practice altogether. As of Monday of this week, Davis stood with a overall mark, having lost to Weber and n Bonneville in and Viewmont in league. Their only victory was a win over CkarfieM. "Bonneville has an excellent program this year, but we didnt play well against Weber, said Bitner. pre-seaso- Two former Layton Lancer baseball greats, Kenny Heath and Alan Gentry, are now valuable parts to the Florida State Seminole baseball machine. Gentry graduated from Layton in 1982 while Heath graduated last ycair. Both played under Brad Hawkins who was instrumental Jn helping them land a spot on the Florida college team. ; |
