Three national art awards have been received by Mrs. Eliza R. Fillmore, Provo, state art chairman and regional director of the Northwestern division of the American Artists Professional League. Mrs. Fillmore is the recipient of a personal award for winning third place nationally as a regional art director. Mrs. Fillmore directed National Art Week activities during 1963 for Utah, Nevada, California, Washington and Oregon as well as serving in the dual role of state director for Utah. A second award waspresented to Utah for fourth place in a compilation of art activities by the 26 county directors of activities for Art Week held throughout the state. The third award was an honorable mention won by the Utah press book, which is a compiliation of newspaper clippings dealing with art activities. TO CELEBRATE MASS VATICAN CITY (UPI)—Pope Paul VI will celebrate a Mass in the Sistine Chapel Sunday to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Michelangelo. When fifth grade teacher Larry Beveridge first called the roll last fall at Westmore Elementary School three Davids, two Johns, two Toms, two Lindas. and an assortment of Anns answered. “We were quite confused the first couple of weeks,’’ Mr. Beveridge admits. But having a class the previous year with a number of name duplications, Mr. Beveridge leaned on his past experience and sheer courage and proceeded to develop a system whereby he could conduct an orderly class. Although there were four Anns in the class, this proved the easiest problem to solve, since three of them had Ann only for a middle name. Mr. Beveridge just did away with name embellishments and Connie Ann, Kathy Ann and Becky Ann became Connie, Kathy and Becky. This left no confusion where Ann was concerned. The Davids — being three strong and all boy — were the biggest problem. Mr. Beveridge resorted to use of last names in two cases. David Jolley is usually called Jolley; David Prue is Prue, and David Rog- ers, just David (which is likely what his parents had in mind anyway on christening day.) One of the Toms (surnamed Erickson) proved very obliging. Heprefers being called Tommy, leaving the name Tom for Tom Houghton. John Olive answers most of the time to Olive, and John Jeppesen (although its an oddity in the situation) answers to John. Linda Hirst also answers to Linda, while Linda Whitney gets aAmore masculine treatment “GET RID OF YOUR GUM, DAVID !”—Westmore clemeentary School teacher Larry Beveridge gives a multiple command to David Jolley, left; David standing Emerald-cut diamond highlighted by four round diamonds in 14K gold. The three Davids consitute only part of the Mr. Beveridge says that a situation such as this can be handled only by seating same- name students in opposite parts of the classroom. This serves to eliminate confusion if he should accidently turn and address one of the surname-Davids as just plain David. Tone of voice plays an im- portant role, Mr. Beveridge asserts. You just automatically speak gently to timid little girls, more loudly to the class mischief, and more businesslike to’ a studious child, he says. “The French teacher is the same-name problem Mr. Beveridge encounters in his fifth grade class. A 10TH VICTIM DIES BONN (UPI)—The West German Defense Ministry announced that a naval lieutenant died Thursday, becoming the 10th victim of a stray mortar shell during military exercises in Bergen-Hohne last week. The shell hit a truck carrying military observers. Except for one Dutch and one Indonesian officer, all the dead were German. The students go to her class for 15-minute periods in which the three Davids, two Johns and two Toms delight in sitting together. When the frustrated teacher asked the class to wear name cards, the Davids and Johns and Toms ommitted their last names. Mr. Beveridge also feels a note of sympathy for Principal Fenton Prince, “‘When I tell |him David is in trouble, he always has to ask which one.” ‘200 A new, unique setting for this out- Seee Provo, $.L.C., Mondays Ogden 62 WRIST Til 9 pm. Your type of driving—regular gas The Run was through cities and towns, across: super highways, in traffic, out of traffic. This was not race track driving or proving ground driving. This was your find of driving—even though you can’t expect to get as good mileage as these expert drivers in their finely tuned production cars. The distance was 3,243 miles, about what most families log in four months. All three Buicks used regular gas. So the Economy Run is not just a cross country tour for the Mobil people and a few car buffs. It’s a reliable test of a car's power team and whatit's able to squeeze out of its fuel. We don’t expect everybody to rush outthis week-end to buy a new Buick just because we won a few economy trophies. There are so many other good reasons for leaning to Buick that economy usually gets second billing. There’s ane: nai ly. An unusually neering and great ride. ordinary engiworkmanship. And very young performance. Small wonder Buick sales are running at 11.5% over last year. Butit’s nice to get economy as a plus in a Buick. Beyondthe dollars saved on gasoline, there’s a certain pride in knowing you have a car that’s built to get the most out of every tank of gasoline. Wouldn’t You Really Rather Have a Buick?
