Show Barry Leads In Delegates votes were cast. Lodge was a runaway victor in his homestate of Massachusetts and Goldwater a weak second. Goldwater ran fourth in Pennsylvania behind Scranton, Lodge and former Vice President Richard M. Nixon. Won Some Delegates Despite his showing in the popularity contest part of the ballot, Goldwater picked up at least a handful of delegates in the two states. Most of the 34 delegates elected by Massachusetts Republicans favor Lodge for the presidential nomination, but Goldwater won at least four. One known Goldwater supporter was elected a delegate in Pennsylvania, but the Goldwater headquarters claimed at least five delegates from the state. Pennsylvania will send 64 delegates to the national convention, most of them uncommitted but available to Scranton, who has said he would take the nomination only if drafted. Before this week’s pri- maries, Goldwater’s headquarters claimed 204 delegates of 379 chosen so far and said 50 others were favorable to the Arizona senator. Surprise Winner Lodge, the absentee candidate at his diplomatic post in South Viet Nam, won 14 delegates by his surprise victory in the New Hampshire primary to go along with his bag in Massachusetts this week. Goldwater expects to pick up another batch of delegates at the Tennessee GOP convention this weekend and is favored to win the Indiana primary next Tuesday. Indiana’s 32 convention delegates, chosen by a state convention, will be bound on the first ballot by the primary outcome. The next major GOP primary contest comes May 16 in Oregon, where Lodge is favored to win all 18 convention delegates.
